Macron warns antisemitism is back, 120 years after Dreyfus

Macron presided over a state ceremony for the 120th anniversary of Dreyfus's rehabilitation and warned that antisemitism is resurgent in France.

One hundred and twenty years after Alfred Dreyfus was formally rehabilitated, France's Jewish communities face a threat the country's own president has now publicly acknowledged as ongoing. Emmanuel Macron presided over an official ceremony honoring Dreyfus, according to Le Monde, and warned that vigilance against antisemitism must be constant, not occasional. 🔹 What happened: The French head of state led a state commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the Dreyfus rehabilitation. Dreyfus was a Jewish military officer falsely convicted by French state institutions in a case that exposed deep-rooted institutional antisemitism. Macron used the anniversary not only as a historical reference but as a platform to name antisemitism as a present and resurgent danger, without announcing specific new measures during the ceremony. 🔹 Why it matters: For Jewish families and individuals in France, a presidential acknowledgment that the threat is real and active matters beyond symbolism. It validates what many describe as a lived experience. The Dreyfus case is a reminder that prejudice can be embedded in the very institutions meant to provide protection. Macron's framing asks French society to look inward. The harder question is whether that acknowledgment will produce protective policy or remain at the level of ceremony. 📌 EPM Take: There is an uncomfortable irony in a French president honoring Dreyfus: the perpetrators of that injustice were not a mob but officers, judges, and ministers — the state itself. Macron is now the state. EPM has reported on how compounding pressures across Europe, from energy costs hitting low-income French households to the ongoing war in Ukraine, historically create conditions where scapegoating rises. The call for vigilance is necessary. But vigilance without accountability structures is a speech, not a policy. The people most at risk deserve both, and the ceremony offered only one.
