Merz Has Germany's Mandate — Now What Does He Do With It?

Friedrich Merz became Chancellor with Germany's strongest conservative mandate in decades. Erick Serrano examines his first weeks — and the AfD firewall questio

🔹 Context: Friedrich Merz took office as German Chancellor in early 2026 after the CDU's victory in February's federal elections — the strongest conservative result in Germany since Helmut Kohl. He inherited a country in recession, an industrial sector under pressure from Chinese competition and American tariffs, and a NATO alliance demanding serious defense investment. Six weeks in, let us take stock. 🔹 My Read on This: I will admit something upfront: I was not sure Merz would make it to the chancellery. The CDU's internal politics have been brutal since Merkel left. There is a temptation to see the February result as ideological validation — voters moving right. I think it is simpler than that. Germans were exhausted with the Scholz coalition. That is not the same as enthusiasm for what comes next. Merz has started with two things that should help Germany's standing: a serious commitment to NATO's 2% defense spending target, and a genuine industrial policy conversation that the Scholz government kept deferring. Both are necessary. Both are late. 🔹 What Others Miss: What I am watching more carefully is the migration question. Merz pushed through a parliamentary motion — with AfD votes — that will mark a constitutional moment in German politics for years. The debate about using AfD support broke the so-called firewall that mainstream parties had maintained. Whether it becomes a precedent or remains an exception will tell us more about the Merz chancellery than any policy announcement. The industrial side is more encouraging. Germany needs a Mittelstand renaissance — support for medium-sized manufacturers losing to Chinese competitors they cannot out-price. Whether Merz's government will deliver industrial support without dressing it up as corporate welfare for DAX companies is the real test. 🔹 The Real Issue: Germany matters to Europe in a way no other country does. When German politics stabilizes, EU politics stabilizes. A functioning German government under Merz is better for Europe than a dysfunctional one under a weakened Scholz. That is a low bar, but it is the relevant one right now. 🔹 What I Expect: Merz will push through budget discipline, increase defense spending, and tighten migration policy. The real test will be industrial policy — whether he can restructure German manufacturing for a world without cheap Russian gas and with a more competitive China. 📌 EPM Analysis: Merz is the right person for a narrow set of problems Germany actually has. The question is whether those are the problems that matter most.
