New WhatsApp calls threaten to repeat Ceuta's mass border crossing

New WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram messages are calling for a repeat mass crossing into Ceuta around August 15, following the July 31 event when 72,000…

On July 31, 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta in a single day — and now nearly identical social media messages are organizing a new attempt for August 15, according to eldiario.es, which accessed relevant chats verified by Maldita.es. Behind every message in those WhatsApp groups is a person willing to risk their life to reach Europe, and Spain's government response remains centered on coordination language rather than answers about what happens to those who arrive. 🔹 What happened: Messages on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram are circulating with calls for a new mass crossing, primarily targeting August 15. Some participants in the groups propose an earlier date to avoid overcrowding at the border. Spain's government confirmed that its security services give full credibility to these messages. Even so, government sources described a repeat of the July 31 scale as "very unlikely," citing permanent bilateral contact with Morocco and stating both governments are "on full alert." 🔹 Why it matters: EPM has previously reported that 500 unaccompanied minors were stranded in Ceuta after the July 31 crisis with no clear political response, and that seven minors were among 86 people detained in Morocco in its aftermath. The people responding to these new calls face the same risks as those who crossed last month — and the same absence of a clear reception framework on the Spanish side. Declaring the situation under control does not resolve what awaits those who make it across. The humanitarian pressure point in Ceuta has not been structurally addressed since July 31. 📌 EPM Take: The pattern is documented: social media mobilization, institutional reassurance, then 72,000 people at the border. EPM's prior coverage showed that 500 unaccompanied minors remained stranded in Ceuta with no coordinated political solution weeks after the event. If August 15 produces even a fraction of July 31's volume, the question will not be how many crossed — it will be what Spain and Morocco have actually put in place for those who do. Neither government's public statements answer that question. The people in those WhatsApp groups are not waiting for an answer.
