Iran Weighs Military Strikes in Europe as Talks with Washington Collapse

The Financial Times revealed that two internal Iranian regime sources confirmed Iran has assessed striking U.S.

Iran has begun evaluating strikes against U.S. military interests on European soil, a shift that places workers and communities near allied bases — not diplomats or generals — closest to the consequences of a conflict they had no part in shaping. --- THE CONTEXT --- The Financial Times reported that two internal sources within the Iranian regime confirmed that Iranian forces have assessed striking U.S. interests in southeastern European countries. The disclosure comes as negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei last week elevated hardliners to senior military and security posts. --- THE FACTS --- According to the Financial Times, Bulgaria, which last month authorized the use of its Bezmer air base to refuel U.S. aircraft, is among the locations Iranian forces have assessed as potential targets. Cyprus, where a British air base was struck by a drone in March, also appears in Iran's evaluation. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other commanders have warned that in any new large-scale conflict, Iran would go beyond its previous strategy of targeting U.S. military assets, energy facilities and infrastructure in the Middle East. Iranian forces have additionally assessed striking undersea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday, Trump stated there were no conversations with Tehran underway or scheduled. Sidharth Kaushal of the Royal United Services Institute described the threat posed by Iranian missiles to targets in Europe as real but limited, noting that Shahab medium-range ballistic missiles would struggle to inflict damage at greater distances. --- THE POSITIONS --- Iran's internal sources describe renewed conflict as a matter of when, not if. The Revolutionary Guard has stated that any base used to launch an attack against Iranian territory will be considered a legitimate target. Trump offered no diplomatic opening on Tuesday. Kaushal's assessment introduces a technical caveat that the source does not resolve. --- WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN --- The Financial Times does not publish the internal documents behind Iran's assessments. Bulgaria's and Cyprus's official responses to the threat are not known, nor is it clear whether NATO has been formally briefed on contingency plans. --- UNANSWERED QUESTIONS --- • What concrete steps have Bulgaria and Cyprus taken to protect civilians and base personnel in light of these assessments? • Have the parliaments of the affected European countries been informed about the basing agreements and the risks they carry? • What would a strike on undersea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz mean for global communications workers and dependent communities? • Is there any active diplomatic channel between the European Union and Iran capable of reducing tension before escalation is deemed inevitable in Tehran? --- EPM ANALYSIS --- The Financial Times report places European citizens inside the direct consequence radius of a dispute that had, until now, appeared geographically remote. Communities near Bezmer and the British base in Cyprus are the most immediately exposed, not the policymakers who authorized the basing agreements. The decisive variable is whether Washington offers any diplomatic channel before Tehran concludes escalation is unavoidable — something Trump's Tuesday statement made no easier. 📌 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the authorization of Bezmer for U.S. refueling and the continued British presence in Cyprus are exactly the kind of silent exposure that reaches ordinary people before it reaches the officials who signed the agreements. EPM has followed the human cost of hybrid conflict on European soil. Hardliners now hold the senior posts in Tehran's security apparatus, talks are stalled and Washington has declared no conversations are underway. That combination deserves far more transparency from European governments toward their own citizens than has so far been offered.
