Podemos backs housing decrees as tenants press for protection

--- The context --- Housing has become the focal point of social pressure in Spain. Tenant collectives have camped since Saturday in Madrid's Puerta del Sol and staged demonstrations across the country demanding protection against steep rents and evictions. That street pressure reached Congress, where the government needs outside support to carry its housing rules through tomorrow's vote. --- The facts --- Podemos confirmed on Thursday that its four lawmakers will vote in favour tomorrow in Congress of both government housing decrees. One text proposes extending rental contracts indefinitely. The package also includes a ban on evicting vulnerable people who lack alternative housing until 2030, purchases of homes from vulture funds until 2028 and tax relief measures. The announcement followed a morning meeting with the Confederation of Tenants' Unions. The collective had asked parliamentary groups to back the measures and urged that social mobilisation continue beyond the parliamentary vote itself. --- The positions --- Ione Belarra argued that her party serves as a tool in the hands of the social movement and therefore heeds the call of the campers. She also contended that splitting the regulation into separate texts is a trap the PSOE habitually uses to lean on other parties as an excuse. In her assessment the measures amount to crumbs that cannot pay the rent, and she predicted that within a month rents would remain sky high, evictions would continue and the housing business would keep generating enormous profits. --- What remains unknown --- Approval now rests with Junts, which has voiced reservations, although the executive described itself as optimistic on Wednesday. The final stance of the PNV and Coalición Canaria also remains undisclosed, and their votes are essential. Support from both parties combined with an abstention by Junts would be enough to validate the decrees. --- Unanswered questions --- Will Junts abstain or ultimately block approval in tomorrow's vote? Will the PNV and Coalición Canaria reveal how they intend to vote before the session opens? Will tenant collectives keep their encampment and protests running if the decrees are validated? --- EPM analysis --- The episode shows the street setting the pace of a parliamentary decision. A party that judged the proposal insufficient ended up aligning itself with those occupying the square and demanding basic rights to remain in their homes. Protection against eviction and longer contracts offer immediate relief to vulnerable households, even though Podemos itself acknowledges that the relief is limited compared with the scale of the housing problem. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the announced backing matters less for its enthusiasm than for its origin: it stems from organised tenant pressure that turned housing into an unavoidable issue for Congress. Approving both decrees would shield vulnerable people and halt evictions, yet it would not fix the rental market's underlying dynamics. Mobilisation, rather than parliamentary arithmetic, will decide whether this step becomes sustained policy or remains an isolated gesture in the face of an emergency that keeps growing across Spanish cities week after week.
