Explosive attack on a bridge in Cauca leaves more than 200 families cut off

The attack, preliminarily attributed to the Jaime Martínez structure, restricted the mobility of more than 200 families in Santander de Quilichao.

--- The context --- Colombia's Ministry of Defense rejected the explosive attack against a bridge in the municipality of Santander de Quilichao, in northern Cauca, which restricted the mobility of more than 200 families, according to details provided by the National Army. --- The facts --- Authorities preliminarily attributed the action to the Jaime Martínez structure of the FARC dissidents. The Third Division's report indicated that those responsible used several explosive devices against the road structure: it initially confirmed it was the La Teta bridge, although in another section of the official information it identified it as the La Balsa bridge. Soldiers from Light Cavalry Group No. 8 and personnel from the Colombian Aerospace Force carried out checks in the affected area to rule out the presence of other explosives and to support the work aimed at restoring traffic. Hours before the explosion, troops from the 29th Brigade recovered a tanker vehicle that, according to the Army, had allegedly been stolen by members of the same armed structure. The vehicle was transporting more than 11,000 gallons of fuel, which was to be used to sustain illicit economies linked to coca crops. --- The positions --- The ministry condemned the attack in its statement, classified it as a terrorist attack and said institutional capabilities had already been deployed in the area to prevent new episodes of violence, recover mobility and protect the population. In a statement published on social media, the ministry announced that it will pursue those responsible and bring them to justice. The Army rejected the use of improvised explosive devices, warning that they put civilian communities at risk, and said operations will continue in the sector with the purpose of reducing the illegal armed groups' capacity for action. --- What remains unknown --- The Ministry of Defense said the attack sought to generate fear among the area's inhabitants and reiterated that the authorities will maintain the operational deployment in Santander de Quilichao. The entity did not specify the magnitude of the damage to the bridge or an estimated date for the full recovery of mobility. --- Unanswered questions --- What is the real magnitude of the damage to the bridge, and when will mobility be restored for the more than 200 affected families? Did the Jaime Martínez structure act alone in the attack? What measures will the authorities take to protect the communities while traffic is restored? --- EPM analysis --- The attack adds to a chain of events in Cauca: on Friday, October 16, 2026, a detonation was reported that left two people injured on the Variante Sur, south of Popayán, and on October 12 an attack attributed to the dissidents destroyed the El Bordo toll and left three civilians injured on the Pan-American highway, on the stretch connecting La Sierra and Patía. In that case, the Third Division attributed the action to the Carlos Patiño Structure, and President Abelardo de la Espriella rejected the attack and said those responsible will face justice. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the attack on the Santander de Quilichao bridge is not an isolated event: it is the third blow against Cauca's infrastructure and mobility in a few days, and its real target is not a metal structure but the more than 200 families left cut off. The Government's announced response — operational deployment, pursuit of those responsible and recovery of mobility — will be measured in concrete facts: how long traffic takes to return and whether the Jaime Martínez structure truly loses capacity for action in the north of the department.
