Main suspect in Santiago killing repatriated from Jamaica to face process

--- The context --- The case dates back to April of this year, when driver Deivy Carlos Abreu Quezada died in Santiago. Since then, the investigation continued in the Dominican Republic, while the main suspect remained outside the country, detained in Jamaica on immigration matters since last August. --- The facts --- On Tuesday afternoon, Jhovanny de Jesús Metz arrived at Las Américas International Airport on a flight from Jamaica. He was repatriated and placed in the custody of the Public Prosecutor's Office to answer for his alleged role in the crime, after the steps for his return were completed. --- The positions --- The Public Prosecutor's Office said the accused was wanted in the country for his alleged link to the homicide. The repatriation was carried out through coordination by Dominican authorities, with the collaboration of the International Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to official information. --- What remains unknown --- The next procedural steps and the date of any hearing have not yet been disclosed. It is also unknown whether the accused will have assigned counsel, or how his case will proceed alongside the seven other motorcyclists held in preventive detention in this case. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the accused appear before a judge in the Dominican Republic? What measures will guarantee his right to a defense during the process? How will his case be coordinated with that of the seven other motorcyclists in preventive detention? --- EPM analysis --- The return shows a procedure supported by cooperation between Dominican institutions and international bodies. At the same time, the case requires respect for the presumption of innocence and due process, because being identified as a suspect does not amount to a conviction or replace the corresponding trial. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, an orderly repatriation carried out with international cooperation is the right way for a pending case to be resolved before Dominican courts, with full guarantees for the accused and with respect for the victim's memory. Justice gains credibility when it acts through procedure, without shortcuts and without early convictions, and when each institution fulfills its role within the law in force today.
