Nine-year-old boy killed by truck in northeastern Medellin

A nine-year-old boy died in Santo Domingo Savio, northeastern Medellin, after being struck by a van whose driver lost control.

A nine-year-old boy died this afternoon in the Santo Domingo Savio neighborhood, in northeastern Medellin, after being struck by a truck in an incident that again placed the safety of hillside neighborhood streets at the center of attention. --- The context --- Santo Domingo Savio is a residential area in the northeast of the city, with narrow and sloping streets used every day by pedestrians, children and cargo vehicles. In that everyday setting, where neighborhood life unfolds in the street, any loss of control of a heavy vehicle can have immediate and serious consequences for those walking through the area. --- The facts --- The incident happened at Carrera 29 and Calle 110A, where the driver of a van-type vehicle lost control and ran over the child, who was passing through the sector. The boy's identity has not been revealed by the authorities, out of respect for the family at a moment of profound grief. After what happened, some residents tried to confront the driver. He had to be protected by the Police and taken to a nearby station, while authorities sought to preserve order at the scene and allow the competent institutions to carry out their work. --- The positions --- According to the Mobility Secretariat, the vehicle was immobilized and taken to the impound lots for the corresponding expert examination. The case is now in the hands of the Prosecutor's Office, which will determine responsibilities. Pablo Ruiz, the mobility secretary, said indirectly that they are providing psychosocial and legal support to the parents and relatives of the deceased child through the victims unit, and sent them a supportive embrace while lamenting the terrible loss. --- What remains unknown --- The reasons why the driver lost control of the van are still unknown, as is the result of the expert examination ordered on the immobilized vehicle. No information has been released either on judicial decisions regarding the driver or on concrete measures for the point where the incident occurred, at Carrera 29 and Calle 110A. --- Unanswered questions --- What did the expert examination reveal about the van's mechanical condition and operating state? What factors on the road in Santo Domingo Savio may have contributed to the loss of control of the vehicle? What measures will authorities adopt to protect pedestrians, and especially children, on the streets of this neighborhood? --- EPM analysis --- With this case, Medellin reached 250 people killed in traffic accidents, according to figures from the Mobility Observatory. That figure even exceeds the number of people murdered in the city: as of October 21, there were 206, the lowest since records have been kept, authorities have said. That road crashes now leave more dead than homicidal violence has led some experts to consider them already a public safety and public health problem. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the death of a nine-year-old boy in Santo Domingo Savio cannot be read only as an isolated incident, because it occurs as Medellin reaches 250 deaths in traffic accidents, above the 206 people murdered as of October 21. Behind each figure there is a family and a neighborhood asking for concrete answers about the condition of vehicles, the state of the roads and the effective protection of the most vulnerable pedestrians in daily life.
