Nine bus crash patients remain in critical care units near Barcelona

Nine of the 87 people treated after a service bus plunged down an embankment in Fogars de Monclús remain in critical, semi-critical or resuscitation units, and…

--- The context --- A regular service bus plunged down an embankment in Fogars de Monclús, in the province of Barcelona, leaving a large number of injured people in the care of emergency services. Medical attention continues while the condition of the most delicate cases is clarified. --- The facts --- The accident happened at around 16:43 yesterday, when, for reasons that are being investigated, the bus left the road, a narrow winding route, and fell some ten metres down an embankment. Of the 87 people treated, 49 have a mild prognosis, 31 are less seriously injured and seven are in serious condition. According to the latest update from the Medical Emergency System, some 42 people remain admitted to different centres and nine are in critical, semi-critical or resuscitation units. --- The positions --- Jorge Morales, the medical chief of the Medical Emergency System, reported on the situation at the firefighters' command centre and indicated, in indirect terms, that the injured have traumatic injuries and that several operations were carried out. He added that their condition could be specified in the coming hours. --- What remains unknown --- It remains to be seen how the nine injured people in critical, semi-critical or resuscitation units will progress. The reasons why the bus left the road are also still unknown. --- Unanswered questions --- Is the life of any of the nine patients in critical care units feared to be at risk? What caused the bus to leave the road on a narrow winding route? When will the precise progress of those with traumatic injuries be known? --- EPM analysis --- The immediate priority is caring for the injured and monitoring the serious cases. The investigation should clarify what happened on that narrow winding road, because only with known causes can the route's safety conditions be reviewed. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the recovery of the injured comes first, especially those who remain in critical, semi-critical or resuscitation units, along with clear information about their progress. Alongside that care, the investigation must move forward without delay, because a service bus leaving the road and plunging down an embankment requires verified answers about the circumstances of the crash.
