--- The context --- The United Kingdom today, on 30 October 2026, resolved an energy infrastructure case moving through its formal planning system. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero granted development consent to the Sea Link project, closing the examination phase and leaving a public record of each step followed. --- The facts --- The project comprises construction of a new converter station within 5km of the proposed Friston substation, connected via High Voltage Alternating Current underground cables, known as HVAC, between the new converter station and the proposed Friston substation. The application was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate by National Grid Electricity Transmission Plc on 27 March 2025 and accepted for examination on 23 April 2025. During the six-month examination, the public, statutory consultees and interested parties could give evidence to the Examining Authority. Recommendations were made to the Secretary of State on 30 July 2026. This is the 118th energy application out of 186 examined to date, completed within the statutory timescale of the Planning Act 2008. The decision was made by Baroness Curran on behalf of the Energy Secretary's legal authority. --- The positions --- The institutional position is that of a complete and documented procedure. The Examining Authority said it listened and gave full consideration to all local views and the evidence gathered before recommending, while local communities were able to take part in the examination. --- What remains unknown --- The official notice does not state the electrical capacity of the link, its costs or the construction timetable after consent. It records no local reactions either. What can be verified is the decision, its examination history and the evidence published on the project pages. --- Unanswered questions --- When will work begin on the converter station and the underground cables? What electrical capacity will the link with the Friston substation finally provide? How will the views raised by communities during the examination be followed up? --- EPM analysis --- The strength of this decision lies in its traceability. There was a dated application, an examination open to participation, a reasoned recommendation and a decision signed on behalf of the competent authority. That public record lets citizens review what was decided, on what evidence and under whose responsibility. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Sea Link shows that a major energy project gains legitimacy when its process stays open to full scrutiny, with real local participation, statutory timescales met and evidence published alongside the decision. That standard should be demanded of every comparable project, because public trust does not come from the official announcement itself, but from the effective possibility of checking how the outcome was reached and who answered for each step of the procedure followed through to its formal close in this particular case.
