Rubio: US did not take part in Bolsonaro's exit from Brazil

Marco Rubio said in Atlanta that the United States did not take part directly in Flávio Bolsonaro's departure from Brazil and only authorized his entry because…

--- The context --- The departure of Flávio Bolsonaro, a former presidential candidate of the Liberal Party, from Brazil raised questions about the route he took before arriving in the United States, after the runoff. --- The facts --- Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia, where he hosted the G20 foreign ministers for a two-day meeting, that the United States government did not take part in the preparations for the departure. According to his account, Bolsonaro already held a visa and the president decided to allow him to enter when he reached a point of entry. The route began in Argentina. The senator entered on October 27 through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, in Misiones, together with his wife and his two daughters. At 23:30 he boarded a private flight from Puerto Iguazú to Guayaquil, Ecuador, and from there he continued on to Miami. --- The positions --- In Brazil, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, had ordered the surrender of Bolsonaro's passports and had barred him from leaving Brazilian territory in a case involving alleged money laundering. The Federal Police said it has no official record of the departure. Brazil's foreign ministry summoned the Argentine chargé d'affaires in Brasilia, María Emilia Cortés, to request information about a possible role by officials of Javier Milei in the transfer. Brazilian diplomatic sources described it as a procedure to gather data, without a formal protest. The Argentine presidency maintained that Bolsonaro entered without international alerts or recorded restrictions, the condition that, according to Cabinet Chief Diego Santilli, allowed his entry. Already in Miami, Bolsonaro reappeared in a broadcast of about 20 minutes. He denounced political persecution, thanked supporters for the nearly 60 million votes he received and raised running for the presidency again before 2030. --- What remains unknown --- It is not established how each leg of the journey was organized or whether any Argentine official took part in it. Nor is there a public answer on how he left Brazil despite the order to surrender his passports. --- Unanswered questions --- How did Bolsonaro leave Brazil without an official Federal Police record? Did any Argentine official take part in the transfer, as Brazil's foreign ministry asked? What steps will Brazil take after summoning the Argentine chargé d'affaires? --- EPM analysis --- Rubio avoided referring to Bolsonaro's electoral accusations and focused on Washington: the United States allowed the entry but did not organize the route. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Rubio's clarification limits United States responsibility to an entry decision supported by a visa already in place, and leaves the substantive questions at the other two ends of the route: the departure from Brazil despite a court order in force and the passage through Argentina with no alerts on record. That separation orders the debate, because each leg requires explanations from different authorities with records of their own that have not yet been made fully public.
