Urda crash halts the pre-campaign and forces a strategy reset

The Urda rail disaster halted Spain's pre-campaign and forced every party to rewrite its strategy.

--- The context --- Spain's pre-campaign was moving to the rhythm of social protests and a planned general strike over housing when the Urda rail accident changed everything. The shock brought the parties' pace to an abrupt halt and forced them to redesign their strategies for the final electoral battle. --- The facts --- The People's Party reached the accident searching for ways to reverse a polling slide that was cutting its projected seat count week after week. Its original roadmap leaned on security and immigration through hard-line figures, after unrest in Barcelona, A Coruña and Bilbao. That landscape shifted with Urda, a second rail disaster in barely a year after Adamuz. The case sits with the Orgaz court of instance, and the transport ministry tries to place the blame on the decision of an Atocha operator, whose instruction came after a chain of technological incidents. --- The positions --- Feijóo relaunches his campaign this Monday, a public holiday, after meeting his inner circle and the party's regional barons. The PP will choose a manager's profile, built on the idea that Spain should work again, and will avoid hyperbole over the tragedy because it would only benefit Vox. Feijóo met 15 infrastructure experts and promised a trusted figure to succeed Óscar Puente at the transport ministry if he reaches La Moncloa. The PP will also act as private prosecutor in Orgaz: Alma Ezcurra argued that Urda cannot be explained simply as an accident. The PSOE closes ranks around Puente because, according to Pedro Sánchez, there is no reason at all for his removal, despite speculation that he is already spent. The socialist wing backs the ministry's version about the Atocha operator. Vox will also act as private prosecutor in the case because, according to its leader, the government's decisions are marked by ideological fanaticism and there is corruption linked to the problems that emerged after the accidents. Sumar, which requested Puente's appearance, avoids pointing directly at the minister but demands transparency and that responsibilities be assumed. Ada Colau, leader of Frente Amplio, argued that human error alone cannot explain the tragedy. --- What remains unknown --- The full findings of the investigation into the chain of technological incidents are still unknown, as is the exact weight of the operator's decision. Puente's appearance before Congress is expected, after press conferences laying out the investigation minute by minute. --- Unanswered questions --- What failed in the safety system for a chain of incidents to end in tragedy? Will the government accept political responsibility beyond the human error it invokes? Can the PP turn its manager's profile into votes without Vox capitalizing on public anger? --- EPM analysis --- The left's card remains the commission, where it can approve social laws without a veto from the right. The PSOE and Frente Amplio will approve the first relief measures for those affected at the next Council of Ministers, while finalizing housing measures for Congress. There Pablo Bustinduy is expected to bring the cap on transport prices in emergencies. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Urda demands technical truth first and political consequences proportional to what the investigation confirms, neither preventive impunity nor a rush to judgment. The PP is right to lower the hyperbole and offer management, but its court action will only matter if it brings evidence rather than pressure. The government cannot sustain Puente with a simple closing of ranks: it must publish the complete chain of failures and accept whatever follows.
