Historic Caribbean weapons seizure backs the security offensive at sea

--- The context --- Maritime routes in the northern Caribbean have been used by criminal structures to supply themselves with weapons and sow violence in Colombia, a threat addressed through a large scale maritime interdiction operation. The state response combined naval capability, institutional coordination and intelligence work in waters where arms trafficking feeds the organizations that operate across the seas of the country and threaten coastal communities. --- The facts --- The Colombian National Navy, with units of the Caribbean Naval Force and in coordination with the National Police, intercepted a Go-Fast type boat carrying a war arsenal hidden in a double bottom structure in northern Caribbean waters. The operation, carried out on November 4, seized 104 firearms and captured five crew members in flagrante, four Colombians and one Honduran. The material comprises 69 rifles, 30 pistols, 3 grenade launchers, 2 machine guns, 96 magazines and abundant ammunition of various calibers. The vessel was also immobilized and 6.960 American dollars and 23.569 Honduran lempiras in cash were seized. --- The positions --- According to naval intelligence, the cargo belonged to the military supply networks of the organized armed group Conquistadores de la Sierra. President Abelardo De La Espriella highlighted the technical deployment of the uniformed personnel, warned in indirect terms to the narcoterrorists that they will be given no truce, and held that criminal structures will not be allowed to keep using the seas to supply themselves with weapons. --- What remains unknown --- The full route the vessel would have followed and the total reach of the supply network identified by naval intelligence remain to be known, as does the course of the proceedings that follow the capture in flagrante of the five crew members during the operation. --- Unanswered questions --- What other links of the supply network were exposed after this interdiction? How were the seized arsenal and the cash found on board financed? What additional measures will protect coastal communities against these maritime crime routes? --- EPM analysis --- The seizure is presented as the largest arms seizure in Colombian Caribbean waters in the last 45 years, a figure that conveys its weight within the strategic offensive of the public force. Striking the military supply of an organized armed group aims to reduce its capacity for violence and to dismantle the financing schemes that sustain its operations. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this interdiction shows a state that protects better when it coordinates intelligence, naval presence and police action around one clear objective. Backing the security offensive described is also backing the communities that suffer the violence fed by arms trafficking. If the announced firmness is sustained over maritime routes and over criminal financing, the blow of the 104 seizures can translate into less armed capacity in the hands of those who sow violence in the country and greater calm for the Colombian Caribbean.
