Legal aid for inquests moves forward as 53 bids pass the first assessment

Procurement for the new inquests category under the 2024 Standard Civil Contract is advancing: 55 bids in the first round, 53 passing assessment, four…

--- The context --- The United Kingdom is renewing civil legal aid procurement with a new category of law devoted to inquests under the 2024 Standard Civil Contract. The responsible authority reported that it aims to bring in organisations able to handle these cases. --- The facts --- The procurement launched on 4 August 2026 and its first round closed on 4 September 2026 with 55 bids received. Assessment is now complete: 53 bids passed and move into verification. As of 6 November 2026, four applicants completed verification and were awarded contracts, with further contracts to follow as others complete verification. --- The positions --- The responsible authority announced that the procurement now follows the Always On approach used across the 2024 Standard Civil Contract, with applications downloaded and assessed in monthly tranches. Under that position, organisations can keep applying rather than being restricted to a single window, and assessment of the second and third tranches, received since 4 September, is also underway. --- What remains unknown --- How many contracts will be awarded in total is unknown, as is how long verification will take for remaining applicants. The list of approved inquests training courses has not been published yet. --- Unanswered questions --- How many contracts will follow once verification of the 53 successful bids ends? How long will remaining applicants take to finish verification? Which training courses will gain approval and when will the list appear? --- EPM analysis --- Progress is steady: a fully assessed first round, contracts already awarded, and a monthly scheme that keeps the door open to new organisations. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the Always On approach changes the logic of access to legal aid at inquests, because it replaces a single window with continuous entry that can widen the support available to families going through these proceedings. What matters now is the speed of verification and whether approved training guarantees a real, demonstrable standard of competence in every case handled under this new category of law.
