Police seize two firearms in Barahona raids, according to report

Enriquillo and La Ciénaga saw several coordinated raids, according to the Police, with two people detained who will be referred to the Public Prosecutor's…

--- The context --- In Enriquillo and La Ciénaga, Barahona, a raid unfolds in front of neighbours and leaves the community asking what comes next for the people named, according to the Southern Regional Directorate. --- The facts --- As described by the Police, the sequence began with several raids coordinated with the Public Prosecutor's Office; every later step must hold up before prosecutors, to whom the detainees and the seized evidence will be turned over. In La Ciénaga, the police account says, Antonio Ramírez Gómez was arrested during a search where authorities said they seized a Glock model 17 pistol, 9 millimeters, with 12 cartridges. In Enriquillo, according to the report, José Cuevas, 21, was detained; at his residence, the source added, officers seized a handmade firearm called a «chilena» and two cell phones. --- The positions --- What matters most is due process and the presumption of innocence, plus the burden now on prosecutors to sustain the case; the Police presented the raids as actions against criminal acts and in favour of public safety, according to its statement. --- What remains unknown --- Still missing is what prosecutors will request, what a judge will make of the seizures attributed in the police report, and which safeguards will accompany each hearing, in an open file with no guilt declared. --- Unanswered questions --- How will the Public Prosecutor's Office prove each detainee's link to what was seized in his raid? What measures will be requested, and on what evidence? Will the community be able to follow the judicial decisions? --- EPM analysis --- As a public service, safety earns legitimacy when it protects without trampling: calm neighbourhoods and solid case files need each other; an opaque procedure weakens even a good result. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this operation will only have full value if the process respects the rights of the detained people and produces clear, verifiable judicial decisions. Removing a firearm described as illegal may relieve a community, but it replaces neither proof nor a hearing. If prosecutors sustain their case rigorously and the court decides transparently, Barahona will gain safety and trust.
