Ceuta overwhelmed as Feijóo takes crisis to European capitals

Nearly 50,000 people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta as PP leader Feijóo briefed around twenty European leaders and U.S.

Nearly 50,000 people from Morocco entered Ceuta as PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo launched an international communication campaign targeting European leaders and Washington, according to the outlet. EPM previously reported nine deaths among those who reached Ceuta and reception centers overwhelmed by 1,500 arrivals in seven days — a figure now dwarfed by the current scale of crossings. 🔹 What happened: Feijóo contacted around twenty international figures, including the presidents of the European Commission and European Parliament, the European People's Party chief, the chancellors of Germany and Austria, the prime ministers of Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, and Greece, Italy's vice president, and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. He demanded a "massive deployment," Frontex rapid units, an immigration law overhaul enabling border returns, and diplomatic action with Morocco. PP Secretary General Miguel Tellado directly blamed the Sánchez government's migration policy — specifically the regularization of over one million people — for the crisis. 🔹 Why it matters: The people who crossed into Ceuta are the factual center of this story, yet both sides of the political debate are treating the crisis primarily as an argument. Feijóo questions the government's maritime buoys and pushes for harder border enforcement; Tellado frames the arrivals as a consequence of past regularizations. Neither statement addresses the immediate operational question facing emergency workers and volunteers in Ceuta right now: how to shelter, process, and care for tens of thousands of people with no adequate reception capacity in place. 📌 EPM Take: There is a split inside the PP that the political coverage is glossing over: Feijóo is calling foreign capitals and demanding institutional tools; Tellado is making an ideological argument about regularizations. These are not the same message. One is a crisis management posture, the other is a campaign posture — and they are being delivered simultaneously to the same international audience. EPM documented the human cost in Ceuta before this became a diplomatic story. The question that remains unasked is whether either approach — Feijóo's international calls or Sánchez's buoys — changes anything for the tens of thousands of people currently without shelter in the autonomous city.
