Deadlock's massive update smashes Steam records with no launch date in sight

A huge update has propelled Deadlock, Valve's in-development hero-shooter MOBA, to sixth place on Steam with over 220,000 concurrent players.

--- The context --- Deadlock, Valve's in-development MOBA hero shooter, has just received the largest update of its short history. The game remains invite-only, accessible solely through friend invites from the company's own playtesters, and yet it has climbed into Steam's most-played chart. While its established blockbusters dominate the platform, Deadlock is the company's bet on a hybrid genre blending tactical strategy with hero action. --- The facts --- The update significantly overhauls the map and adds six new heroes, new mobs, new objectives, along with refreshed HUD, healthbars, and the Shop, among many other additions. The patch covers virtually every visible system in the game. Technically, the engine code moves to the latest Source 2, with stronger anti-cheat, improved network prediction, better rendering and audio performance, new item art, and sound effects for every hero's melee attacks. The community response was immediate: Deadlock topped 220,000 concurrent players overnight, smashing its all-time record and landing as the sixth most-played game on Steam during that window. Given that access is restricted to invites, the milestone takes on an even larger dimension. --- The positions --- In a post on Steam, the company gave a development update and previewed its plans. It said it is working on large-scale item redesigns and additions, and even on alternate game modes that would expand the scope of the game, while noting that none of this is guaranteed to make the final launch version. On the future schedule, Valve signaled that it considers the Midboss, the Guardians, and the Walkers important although it has not been able to tackle them yet and they will be its next focus, while hero remodels will come at a later stage, though some of that work may show up in upcoming updates. --- What remains unknown --- The big question remains untouched: there is no release date or release window for Deadlock, nor any word on when access will widen with a beta. The project coexists with the maintenance of Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and occasionally Team Fortress 2, the company's major hits sustaining the platform. --- Unanswered questions --- How long will Valve take to open the game's doors to the general public? Will the six new heroes diversify the metagame without breaking competitive balance? What shape will the promised alternate modes take, and will they hold interest beyond the patch's novelty? --- EPM analysis --- What this update reveals is Valve's ability to turn a closed playtest into a cultural event: 220,000 concurrent players on invite-only access is a figure many full launches never reach. The studio is using the patch as a thermometer for both its infrastructure and its community at once. The item redesign and alternate modes point to an ambition larger than a mere hero shooter: Valve is building an ecosystem. The risk, as always with the company, is pacing: between the silence on dates and the backlog of pending tasks, community patience will be its greatest asset and its greatest threat. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Deadlock is becoming the perfect case study on how to launch a game today without launching it: the massive update generates world-premiere-level player peaks while access stays restricted, and Valve gathers real data without committing to a date. If the company keeps this content pace and delivers on the alternate modes, its next big Steam hit looks like a matter of time; if the silence on launch drags on, the accumulated enthusiasm could turn against it.
