Green Party of England and Wales leader Zack Polanski has said he will not accept any member being excluded or made unwelcome because of their background, faith, or where they worship, in his first response to a motion defining Zionism as a form of racism. --- The context --- The motion was approved on Sunday at the party's conference in Brighton by 1,022 votes to 813, after being proposed by a group of activists. It defines Zionism as an ideology supporting what it calls an ethnonationalist Jewish state and backs a single democratic Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine. It argues the real, material manifestation of Zionism has been the historic and ongoing dehumanisation and displacement of Palestinians. The vote exposed a split between the enlarged grassroots base under Polanski and the elected MPs: he did not vote and four of the party's five MPs opposed it. --- The facts --- In a lengthy statement, his first since the motion passed and after declining interviews on Monday, Polanski said he takes seriously his responsibility to make sure everyone feels safe and welcome. He added that he will not accept any exclusion because of the religious or communal body someone is part of. Polanski, who is Jewish, added that antisemitism and criticism of the Israeli state are, and must always be, completely distinct, and that his party stands for deeply held values of compassion, fairness and equality for all. --- The positions --- More than a dozen Labour MPs reported the Greens to the equality watchdog (EHRC) on Monday, arguing the motion raises serious questions about Jewish members' participation. The letters, organised by former Home Office minister Mike Tapp, raised concern that amendments to protect Jewish members attending Zionist synagogues were voted down. Nine Labour MPs also referred the party to Sussex Police over alleged possible antisemitic offences; the force has been contacted for comment. Israel's foreign ministry banned Polanski from entering the country, while some Jewish groups called the motion an attack on the Jewish community. --- What remains unknown --- A Green Party spokesperson reaffirmed the party's commitment to its Code of Conduct. The European Green Party said it wanted to unequivocally distance itself from the motion and would immediately demand clarity on protecting Jewish people. The EHRC said it would consider each complaint carefully and had not at this stage launched an investigation. --- Unanswered questions --- How will the party reconcile a motion adopted by its members with its leader's pledge that no one will be excluded over faith? Will a verbal commitment be enough for Jewish members to feel protected in practice? And what happens to party policy if the EHRC opens a formal investigation? --- EPM analysis --- Green MP Ellie Chowns said she was deeply saddened the motion had become party policy, though she disagreed it was antisemitic. But she called for a review of policymaking processes, since less than 1% of the party's more than 200,000 members voted. A party that preaches participatory democracy must explain how such a small minority can set such explosive policy. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the Green Party's real dilemma is not between criticising Israel and fighting antisemitism — a distinction its own leader, who is Jewish, drew with clarity — but between its internal democracy and the effective protection of its Jewish members. A motion backed by less than 1% of the membership cannot claim to speak for the party. If Polanski wants his pledge to outweigh a paper passed in Brighton, he must turn it into concrete mechanisms before the EHRC or the police speak for him.
