De La Espriella and Flávio Bolsonaro open a common front on drugs

De La Espriella's October 7 video call with Flávio Bolsonaro sets security and drug-trafficking cooperation as the backbone of Colombia-Brazil ties, pointing…

The virtual conversation on October 7 between Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella and Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro delivered a clear message: cooperation on security and drug trafficking will be the backbone of the relationship between the two countries. The call, posted on the candidate's social media, also included his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro. --- The context --- The dialogue took place less than three weeks before the Brazilian presidential runoff, scheduled for October 25, in which Flávio Bolsonaro will face incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. De La Espriella also acknowledged that Jair Bolsonaro, the candidate's father, was one of his political references on security matters. --- The facts --- The two agreed to explore deeper security and drug-trafficking cooperation and kept open the possibility of a bilateral meeting in Colombia. Flávio invited De La Espriella to his potential inauguration in January 2027, an invitation the Colombian president declined, saying he had promised not to leave Colombia for four years, while assuring the candidate of his heartfelt support. De La Espriella described Colombia and Brazil as brother nations able to coordinate efforts against a problem that crosses their borders. --- The positions --- De La Espriella held that a country with security enjoys investor confidence, social investment, development and a future, and that a country can hold all the wealth in the world, as Colombia and Brazil do, but without security it has nothing. He also pledged that any narco-terrorist criminal who does not submit will be taken down as the law requires. On the extradition of the drug trafficker known as Araña, he said the process was unblocked and executed through delivery to the DEA, and he presented it as a form of reparation for victims. --- What remains unknown --- It remains to be seen whether the proposed cooperation will become concrete agreements between the two governments and on what terms the bilateral meeting in Colombia would take place. No operational mechanisms the two countries would share against trafficking networks were detailed. --- Unanswered questions --- What role will Eduardo Bolsonaro play in the future relationship between the two governments? How will the current Brazilian government respond to an outreach that precedes the October 25 runoff? Will the security agenda survive a potential change of administration in Brasília? --- EPM analysis --- The dialogue goes beyond a campaign gesture: De La Espriella is sketching a regional security alliance built on shared ideological references. The mention of Jair Bolsonaro as an inspiration and the direct coordination with the candidate's family point to a conservative bloc prepared to harden the response to drug trafficking across the continent. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the meeting inaugurates an ideologically aligned security diplomacy that could reshape Latin American cooperation against organized crime. If Flávio Bolsonaro wins the runoff, Colombia and Brazil would have the chance to turn words into a joint agenda of operations, intelligence and extraditions. The risk is that the alliance remains trapped in campaign rhetoric if it is not translated into verifiable protocols between the two countries' security forces.
