Military health, consumers and energy: the five stories shaping the day. 1. United Kingdom: Professor Jason Leitch, Scotland's National Clinical Director from 2015 to 2024, will take charge of Defence Medical Command on Monday 2 November. He will lead the reform of military healthcare backed by £50 million for frontline technology and closer collaboration with health services and allies. 2. United Kingdom: The UK competition authority fined Wayfair, Appliances Direct and Gold's Gym a total of £6 million for false time-limited offers, paid extras added without express consent and unclear total prices. Affected customers will be contacted by the businesses about refunds and do not need to take any action. 3. United Kingdom: Dstl is trialling a custom rig with the University of Chichester and QinetiQ that simulates head-mounted loads. Serving soldiers test it during military tasks while speed, muscles, metabolism, cognition and eye movements are measured to improve performance and reduce injury risk. 4. France: A cyberattack affected close to 700 supermarkets in France and altered refrigeration systems, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius according to reports. Some stores discarded food and the Paris prosecutor's office is investigating the full scale of the damage across several chains. 5. El Salvador: Nayib Bukele announced an agreement with Grupo COX worth USD 2,900 million for energy, natural gas, storage and water, presented as the largest private investment in El Salvador's history. The plan includes battery storage, a 380 megawatts gas plant, solar plants and drinking water and sanitation works. 📌 Editor's note: five stories setting the pulse of the week, from military health to energy.
