Lawyer in Meta seeks probe into alleged threats

Lawyer Edwin Gabriel Díaz, president of Cordepública, filed a criminal complaint dated September 25, 2026 reporting alleged threats by a group called Los…

--- The context --- In the department of Meta, criminal defense work unfolds alongside the presence of organized criminal groups and recurring tensions between lawyers, local authorities and communities. The Public Defense Corporation, known as Cordepública, works in that setting, and its president represents people facing judicial proceedings in municipalities such as Granada while raising claims about alleged irregularities in police procedures. The complaint, publicly known, places that work at the center of a dispute over safety, state protection and trust in the institutions responsible for investigating crime and abuse alike. --- The facts --- According to the criminal complaint filed before the Attorney General's Office, in a document dated September 25, 2026, lawyer Edwin Gabriel Díaz reported alleged threats, surveillance and harassment directed at himself, his family, his organization and several people he represents in judicial proceedings in Meta. The filing asks a national unit of the prosecution to take over the case, with support from the Technical Investigation Corps, and requests that the National Police have no role in the proceedings, precisely because part of what must be verified would involve alleged officers. The complaint attributes the communications to people presenting themselves as members of a group called Los Juanitos, described as an organized criminal group operating in Meta. According to the filing, one message allegedly warned the lawyer that he and his family were a military target of the organization, while another communication allegedly suggested he was ready for a photograph, in a tone the complainant reads as a threat. A pamphlet attributed to the group allegedly described him as a defense lawyer and an enemy of the organization and of law enforcement in Granada, and claimed that the group rules that territory. --- The positions --- Díaz maintains, according to the complaint, that the intimidation would be connected to his work as a defense lawyer in Granada and to his claims about possible irregularities in police procedures. At the same time, the filing itself clarifies that the lawyer does not affirm that a link exists between the authors of the threats and public servants, but rather points to indications that, in his view, require investigation. The complaint also gathers claims by civilians alleging possible abuses during police operations and the account of the mother of a deceased young man, according to whom her son was allegedly used as an informant and later killed, a version that likewise remains unproven. An official response from the National Police was sought after the complaint became public, and no statements were received. --- What remains unknown --- It remains to be established who actually sent the messages and pamphlets, whether the group named in the complaint acted as alleged, and whether any relationship existed between those issuing the threats and public officials. There is also no official explanation for the episode described at a residential complex, where neighbors allegedly saw officers photographing the lawyer's vehicle in a parking area, while he says he knows of no judicial order or work mission that would justify that presence. The complaint asks authorities to preserve call and message records from several phone numbers, verify a messaging account and a social media profile, collect security videos and determine whether intelligence orders existed concerning the lawyer or his vehicle. --- Unanswered questions --- Who is behind the messages attributed to the group named in the complaint? Was there any official action that explains the photographs allegedly taken of the lawyer's vehicle at his residential complex? What steps will prosecutors take to protect the complainant while they verify the alleged links he reported? When will the National Police respond publicly to the allegations that indirectly involve the institution? --- EPM analysis --- The case concentrates a delicate tension: a defense lawyer reporting threats asks that the investigation stay away from the institution covered by part of his suspicions. That request proves nothing by itself, but it reveals the level of distrust that can take hold when complaints about alleged abuses and supposed judicial frame-ups coexist with threats from a local criminal group. According to the filing, the lawyer has held protection measures from the National Protection Unit since 2014, reinforced after an extraordinary risk level was validated in October 2025, which shows that the risk surrounding his work is not new. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the heart of this complaint is not yet anyone's guilt, but the duty to investigate every indication presented with full independence. The threats attributed to a criminal group, the alleged links with officers and the accounts about informants and deaths are serious claims that demand rigorous verification, effective protection for the complainant and public answers from the institutions named. Without that national, transparent investigation carried out with guarantees, distrust will keep growing in Meta and defense work will remain exposed to intimidation wherever it may come from.
