Two Dominican men arrested in Bronx stabbing of off-duty detective

An off-duty detective was stabbed seven times on Oct. 2 in Norwood, the Bronx, while defending himself during an attempted robbery.

--- The context --- An off-duty detective was attacked on Oct. 2 in Norwood, in the Bronx, and the case has renewed debate over cooperation between New York City and the federal immigration agency. The public discussion should not be reduced to slogans, because a victim is recovering and two arrested men face processes that must move forward with safeguards and with verified facts rather than assumptions about entire communities. --- The facts --- According to official information, the two suspects approached the off-duty detective in Norwood on Oct. 2 and attempted to rob him. When the detective defended himself, he was stabbed seven times. He was taken to a local hospital and is recovering from his injuries. The suspects fled the scene on an e-bike. The suspects were identified as Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo and Sneider Mejia Bautista, both from the Dominican Republic, and were arrested by local authorities on Oct. 8. The federal immigration agency lodged detainers for the safe transfer of both individuals. Jean Caraballo was encountered by Border Patrol near San Luis, Arizona, in February 2023, served with a notice to appear and released on his own recognizance. Mejia Bautista was encountered in December 2022 near San Luis, paroled and served with a notice to appear. --- The positions --- Director Kenneth Genalo argued in reported speech that the city refusal to honor detainers and its repeated release of removable people have grave and unacceptable consequences, including for the law enforcement officers sworn to protect the city. He also linked the risk to the politicization of public safety and the rejection of cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, and defended policies that prevent future harm rather than create opportunities for it. --- What remains unknown --- The source does not detail the current procedural status of each accused man after the Oct. 8 arrest or specify how the newly lodged detainers will be resolved. It also offers no response from the city on the earlier declined detainer and no additional information on the detective medical progress beyond his recovery. --- Unanswered questions --- How will the criminal process for each suspect advance after the Oct. 8 arrest? What decision will be made on the detainers lodged for the safe transfer of both men? What explanation will the city offer about the earlier detainer it declined in Oct. 2025? --- EPM analysis --- The history attributed to both men requires serious attention and no minimization. Jean Caraballo has a New York history including reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing from a police officer, reckless driving, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a weapon involving a loaded firearm and menacing involving a weapon. Mejia Bautista has a history including criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar tools, grand larceny and criminal possession of a weapon, and an immigration judge ordered him removed in absentia on May 8, 2025. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the seriousness of the attack and the histories described require a firm response that is also verifiable and grounded in due process for each accused man. Protecting the detective and Norwood residents will not come from inflamed rhetoric or opaque decisions, but from transparent institutional cooperation, detainers assessed under clear criteria and processes that distinguish individual responsibilities. The case should be resolved with evidence, procedural safeguards and accountability from every authority involved in the documented prior releases and arrests.
