--- The context --- Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced new arrests of foreign nationals in the country unlawfully who hold convictions for serious crimes. The department said its officers face an increase of more than 1,600% in assaults against them. --- The facts --- The arrests were made yesterday and covered five people. Luc Quy Tran, from Vietnam, convicted of first-degree murder in St. Petersburg, Florida; Luis Enrique Nucamendi-Molina, from Mexico, convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in a household and family setting in Harford County, Maryland; Rahjai Ornardo Suckoo, from Jamaica, convicted of enticing a minor in Moab, Utah; Fredy Adeli Cuxum-Orellana, from Guatemala, convicted of illicit sexual contact with a victim under 16 years old in Stamford, Connecticut; and Francisco Cortez-Perez, from Mexico, convicted of two counts of incest and two counts of statutory rape in Jackson County, Missouri. --- The positions --- Secretary Markwayne Mullin said years of open border policies allowed criminals to enter and harm innocent Americans. He also said that under President Trump that lawlessness has ended and that the agency will keep restoring order by removing foreign nationals in the country unlawfully. --- What remains unknown --- The announcement identifies each person, the conviction and the place of the case, but does not detail the next procedural step for each individual. The department said it publishes more cases on its official page. --- Unanswered questions --- What procedural step will now follow for each person arrested? How will the progress of each case be publicly verified? What measures will accompany protection for the victims named in the release? --- EPM analysis --- The release combines operational results with a political message on borders and order. Its reach should be judged through case by case follow-up, transparency on each file and priority attention to the victims of the crimes described. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the arrests described involve convictions of extreme seriousness and demand a firm, verifiable response centered on victims. Public safety is strengthened when each case is documented precisely, communicated without exaggeration and opened to public scrutiny. The rise in assaults on officers cited by the department also deserves serious attention and checkable data. Protecting communities and maintaining clear rules are not opposing goals: together they form the basis of credible policy.
