Death Toll Rises to 14 in Gold Mine Collapse in Nariño

--- The context --- The death toll has risen to 14 from the collapse at an artisanal gold mine in the municipality of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, on the Pacific coast of Nariño. Another seven people were injured when a landslide collapsed in the open-pit mine and buried the workers, in the Chambero sector. --- The facts --- The tragedy occurred at 8:30 in the morning on Monday, October 19. The Administrative Directorate for Disaster Risk Management of Nariño revealed that 14 people died and another seven were injured. Rescue agencies carried out the search and rescue work with the help of the community. The governor of Nariño, Luis Alfonso Escobar, confirmed that the search work has now ended and that attention is now focused on supporting the affected families. Escobar lamented the tragedy, expressed his solidarity with the municipality and with the families who lost their loved ones, and said that entire families have lost their lives in this lamentable event, which fills the region with deep sorrow. According to the governor, this emergency once again raises the alerts over the risks associated with informal mining in Nariño. On August 19, in the Puerto Rico village of the municipality of Policarpa, an artisanal mine also collapsed and left a toll of 13 dead and 4 injured. In less than three months, two mining collapses in Nariño leave a total of 27 people dead, 14 in Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé and another 13 in Policarpa, in addition to 11 people injured. --- The positions --- The governor reiterated the call on the National Government to review the situation of artisanal and small-scale mining, and the conditions in which many communities carry out this activity, at times without the necessary safety guarantees. He requested the intervention of the competent national entities and the review of the pending processes. Escobar asked for a review of all the formalization requests for these zones, in a call to the National Government, the National Mining Agency and the Ministry of Mines and Energy. For the departmental government, advancing in those processes would improve conditions, reduce risks and protect the lives of the communities that depend on this activity. --- What remains unknown --- The available information does not detail the identity of the 14 people who died or the health condition of the seven injured people. It also does not state what review the national entities will make of the formalization requests or within what timeframe the pending processes will be reviewed. --- Unanswered questions --- What concrete support will the affected families receive now that the search has ended? How will the National Government, the National Mining Agency and the Ministry of Mines and Energy review the formalization requests for these zones? What prevention measures will be adopted so that a collapse like the one in Policarpa is not repeated? --- EPM analysis --- The update to 14 dead closes the search, but opens the underlying question that the governor raised: communities depend on artisanal mining and, at the same time, carry it out at times without the necessary safety guarantees. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the final toll of 14 dead and seven injured in Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, added to the 13 dead in Policarpa, requires the response to go beyond emergency attention, as the governor asked. Support for the families is urgent today, but lasting protection for the communities that depend on artisanal mining requires strengthening prevention, promoting formalization and achieving safer conditions, with an effective review of the requests and of the pending processes that the departmental authorities are demanding in Nariño.
