Colombia's economy contracted in August and forecasts fall

Dane's ISE fell 0,04 % year on year and 3,1 % against July in August, the sharpest monthly setback since the pandemic according to Banco de Bogotá, with falls…

--- The context --- Colombia's economy entered August with accumulated difficulties and then absorbed the earthquake of August 10 in the west. That shock struck production already weak in agriculture, mining, industry and construction, with direct effects on incomes and jobs. --- The facts --- The economic tracking indicator (ISE), measured monthly by Dane, recorded a contraction of 0,04 % year on year and 3,1 % compared with July. According to Banco de Bogotá, it is the sharpest monthly setback since the pandemic. Primary activities fell 3,19 % year on year and 2,06 % monthly, while secondary activities fell 3,03 % annually and 4,1 % monthly. Tertiary activities grew 1,10 % compared with August 2025, but contracted 1,4 % compared with July. --- The positions --- Banco de Bogotá said the earthquake affected activity, although the slowdown had been accumulating. Oxford Economics agreed and attributed part of the contraction to interruptions caused by the quake. The institution stressed that high rates limited credit and investment, and that containing spending moderated public hiring, raising the social cost of adjustment. --- What remains unknown --- The full extent of the quake's damage is still unknown, as is how much of the fall will reverse. Oxford Economics expects to cut its 2026 forecast by 0,4 percentage points to up to 2,5 % and projects 2,4 % for 2027, with El Niño risks. --- Unanswered questions --- How much of the setback was a direct effect of the earthquake and how much was prior weakness? How will this contraction affect jobs and household incomes across the affected sectors? Will the central bank suspend new increases in its interest rate for the rest of the year? --- EPM analysis --- Banco de Bogotá estimates annual growth close to 1 % for the third quarter, compared with 2,2 % forecast by the technical team of Banco de la República. Oxford Economics will move its quarterly estimate from 0,8 % growth to a contraction of between 0,5 % and 0,6 %. An economy contracting on so many fronts needs to protect work and basic production, not only adjust. Without that support, a natural shock becomes a prolonged blow. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the August contraction reveals a vulnerable economy where an earthquake exposed prior fragilities in agriculture, industry, construction and services, while high interest rates restricted credit and fiscal pressure slowed public hiring, leaving households and workers exposed to an uncertain recovery that requires protecting jobs, sustaining social investment and reviewing a model that failed to cushion the shock or prevent analysts from sharply cutting projections for this quarter and for the next two years in Colombia as a whole.
