Feijóo in Vigo calls for shaking hands again

--- The context --- Alberto Núñez Feijóo spoke this Saturday at a pre-campaign event in Vigo, where Alfonso Rueda, president of the Galician PP and of the Xunta, also took the floor. His remarks followed what happened this week in A Coruña and centred on coexistence, violence in public space and the need to recover understanding among people who think differently. --- The facts --- Feijóo regretted the situation experienced this week in A Coruña, condemned violence and the intolerance of the sectarian, and criticised those who seek to stir up streets that, he argued, have turned their backs on them. He referred to the disturbances this week in Plaza de María Pita in A Coruña, where a Vox event and a protest event converged. He said that the violence of the sectarian is not Galicia and called for national reconstruction, with the idea that people should shake hands again. In Vigo, Feijóo considered that what happened in A Coruña is not an isolated and chance episode in Spain and said that there are parties that publicly encourage that stirring of the streets. He also argued that what happened has nothing to do with that city or with that community. --- The positions --- Feijóo argued that those of a single way of thinking are not Galicia, and neither are those who are not capable of convincing and then want to impose. He conveyed, as Alfonso Rueda also did, all his support to the State Security Forces and Corps and to the journalists who were attacked. At the same time, he criticised governing Spain while announcing a wall to isolate those who do not think alike, and attributed to that wall the effect of feeding extremists. --- What remains unknown --- No further detail is available in the information at hand on the measures of that national reconstruction beyond the lines set out at the event. Feijóo proposed guaranteeing security, ensuring that the Police and the Civil Guard have the means and the backing they need, and that nobody sees their rights cut. He also defended a country where people can disagree with words but not with stones, where an older person can leave home safely without avoiding any street or any square, and where understanding among different people is possible. --- Unanswered questions --- How will the call for national reconstruction translate into concrete and verifiable proposals? What response will the criticism of the wall attributed to the Government receive among those who do not share that diagnosis? Will the commitment that nobody sees their rights cut hold when the security measures announced in Vigo are specified? --- EPM analysis --- The value of the remarks lies in joining security and freedoms in the same sentence: backing the security forces and the attacked journalists, while promising at the same time that nobody will see their rights cut. That combination will have to be measured in deeds. Condemning violence and asking people to shake hands again points towards lowering tension. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, condemning the violence in A Coruña and defending that nobody should see their rights cut are two sound points that must be upheld whatever the source of the pressure. The reconstruction Feijóo proposes will gain credibility if it guarantees security without cutting freedoms, if it backs the Police and the Civil Guard with real means, and if it turns understanding among different people into daily practice, not only into a slogan from an event in Vigo this Saturday.
