Audi Georgia plant promises jobs but production waits until early 2030s

Trump announced in Perry that Audi plans a $4 billion Georgia plant producing 200,000 SUVs a year and creating approximately 4,500 jobs.

--- The context --- President Donald Trump announced at a rally in Perry, near Macon in central Georgia, that Audi plans to build its first assembly plant in the United States. Trump seeks support for Republicans in the November 3 midterm elections, in a state with competitive races for Senate and governor, after pressing automakers to move production to the United States. --- The facts --- The plant represents a $4 billion investment and would produce 200,000 SUVs annually. The company said it will create approximately 4,500 jobs, with construction scheduled to begin next year and production starting in the early 2030s. An official said the plant is expected to assemble the Audi Q7, Q8 and Q9 SUVs. The official said Audi also plans 25,000 vehicles a year in South Carolina at a $2 billion Scout Motors plant in Blythewood, near Columbia, with some vehicles exported. Last year tariffs dealt Audi a $1.4-billion blow, as it imports all its vehicles for the US market from Europe or Mexico. Audi sales have fallen for two consecutive years, slid 7% in the first half of 2026, and US sales are down 16% this year amid fierce competition in China. Trump has raised tariffs on autos, steel, aluminum and parts, cut incentives for electric vehicles, and US vehicle and parts employment has fallen since he took office last year. --- The positions --- Audi chief executive Gernot Doellner said the company will bring its biggest and most premium SUVs to produce them in Macon, describing a long-term investment because the company believes in the American market. Senator Bernie Moreno said the plant would never have happened without tariffs and that Audi will build all its SUVs exclusively in the US. Critics say tariffs have boosted vehicle prices and that trade uncertainty has delayed some automaker investments. A gold Audi with manufacturer license plates was parked outside the rally, while the production benefit of the announcement remains years away. --- What remains unknown --- The final incentives, firm milestones and hiring schedule have not been detailed. It remains unclear how the project will affect prices for buyers, or how it fits the future of the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the final terms and construction milestones be confirmed publicly? How many promised jobs will arrive before production begins in the early 2030s? Will buyers keep paying higher prices in the meantime? --- EPM analysis --- The scale is significant, but the timeline tempers the immediate claim. Production in the early 2030s means voters judge a promise whose effects lie beyond the November 3 elections. The Neckarsulm plant in southwest Germany is one of four German Volkswagen plants facing possible closure after 2030. Honda and Hyundai link their own US decisions to certainty on that deal. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the Georgia announcement should be judged by verifiable construction, hiring and production, not by the rally that launched it. Building premium SUVs in the United States is real news, but its benefits arrive in the early 2030s while price and uncertainty concerns are present today. The milestones, the jobs and the effect on buyers will decide whether the promise becomes a completed industrial turnaround for the region and for its workers and communities. That standard should apply to every milestone the company announces from now on.
