Six dead and 28 wounded in attack on a church in Jordan

An attack during a funeral at a church in Hamoud, in Jordan's Karak province, left at least six dead and 28 wounded according to the preliminary official toll.

--- The context --- This Friday, a community in Hamoud, in the province of Karak, in the centre-south of Jordan, had gathered at its church for a funeral. That moment of mourning was interrupted by a shooting that left people dead and wounded. --- The facts --- The Public Security Directorate described the incident as an attack and offered a preliminary toll: at least six dead and 28 wounded. Earlier, a spokesperson for the body had said that unidentified gunmen opened fire inside the church, causing several deaths and injuries, and that security forces are searching for those responsible. Witnesses initially counted at least ten people wounded during the shooting, by their own count, and said the dead and the wounded were taken to Prince Ali Military Hospital. The same witnesses speak of two shooters who fired for five minutes, first outside the church and then inside it, before fleeing. That is the witnesses' account, not confirmed by the Public Security Directorate. --- The positions --- A Public Security Directorate spokesperson expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. The spokesperson also said the incident is already being investigated and that the investigation is moving at a good pace. Communications Minister Mohamed Momani, the government spokesperson, said forces on the ground are still investigating and that statements will be issued once the information is verified. Momani also said Prime Minister Yafar Hassan will chair a security council meeting during the day in Karak with his cabinet, to follow up on the response to what the Government described as an atrocious terrorist crime. --- What remains unknown --- The identity of the attackers and the motive for the attack are not known. No arrests have been reported, nor a final toll, nor the condition of the wounded. The available figures are preliminary and could be updated after official verification. --- Unanswered questions --- Who were the attackers and what motivated an attack during a funeral? Will the preliminary toll of six dead and 28 wounded change? Will the security forces manage to locate those responsible who fled? --- EPM analysis --- To attack a funeral is to strike a community at its most vulnerable moment. Faced with preliminary figures and witness accounts, the responsible course is to hold to what is confirmed, attribute the rest and await official verification. That distinction also protects the families, who deserve confirmed information rather than rumours in the hours that follow an attack on their church during a funeral. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the immediate priority is human before it is political: to stand with the families of the six dead, to care for the 28 wounded and to protect a community struck during a funeral. Jordan also needs a verified investigation that identifies those responsible without speculation, and official communication that always distinguishes between confirmed facts, witness accounts and preliminary data yet to be checked, with every update backed by verification so as not to add further pain to families already struck by loss.
