El Salvador deploys 100 troops in Haiti to rescue four technicians

--- The context --- Haiti has long faced control of wide areas by armed gangs. In Croix-des-Bouquets, the territory is under the control of Chèn Méchan, Kraze Bary e and 400 Mawozo, whose leaders face sanctions from the UN and the United States. --- The facts --- El Salvador sent 100 members of its special forces to Haiti on Thursday to rescue four soldiers missing after a gang attack. The attack took place on Sunday in Croix-des-Bouquets, and the Haitian government reported on Wednesday night that the four had been kidnapped. The special forces arrived one day after President Nayib Bukele announced a military operation to rescue the four aviation technicians. According to two officials who briefed an international agency, Bukele also warned of a stronger response if they are not released alive and unharmed. --- The positions --- A Salvadoran official, speaking anonymously, added that another 100 soldiers would be deployed on Thursday night and that authorities assume the missing men are still alive. That assumption underpins the urgency of an operation focused on protecting the missing personnel. Authorities are confronting armed men in the area, in the first time the Haitian National Police task force has worked alongside the gang suppression force. That task force includes Vectus Global, a private security company founded by Erik Prince. --- What remains unknown --- The exact whereabouts of the four technicians remain unknown, as does their health beyond the official assumption that they are still alive. No contacts, demands or negotiations linked to their release have been reported. --- Unanswered questions --- Where are the four aviation technicians being held and what is their condition? Will the additional deployment on Thursday night secure their release unharmed? How will the Haitian task force and the gang suppression force coordinate on the ground? --- EPM analysis --- The case is the first of this scale since an international gang suppression force began operating in place of the Kenya-led mission, which struggled to contain the gangs for lack of resources. Cooperation among local, international and Salvadoran forces will test whether a coordinated response can protect lives without adding harm for people living in the area. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the immediate priority must be the lives of the four technicians, and every step of the deployment should be judged by its real ability to rescue them alive and unharmed. Cooperation among El Salvador, Haitian forces and the international force can add capacity where resources were previously lacking, provided it acts with clear coordination and protection for civilians. The outcome will show whether this joint operation opens a more effective path against the gangs.
