Arrest of Luisa González opens a judicial front for Ecuador's opposition

--- The context --- Luisa González, a former presidential candidate and one of the leading figures of Ecuador's opposition, was detained in the early hours of October 22 in Canuto, a rural area of Chone, in the province of Manabí, where she lives, 38 days before the sectional elections of November 29. --- The facts --- Prosecutors are investigating an alleged money laundering offence linked to possible irregularities in the financing of the 2023 election campaign, in which González ran for the Citizen Revolution Movement, led by former president Rafael Correa, and lost to Daniel Noboa. The Attorney General's office and the Police carried out detention orders against three people in Pichincha and Manabí, for the formulation of charges. The investigation began in January 2026, with raids on González's home and other properties, and the case examines the possible entry of cash from Venezuela into the campaign of González and Andrés Arauz, included in the proceedings. --- The positions --- González has denied the accusation and has warned that she was the candidate and was not in charge of handling the money. Citizen Revolution has denounced her arbitrary detention and demands that the exact place where she is being held be stated and access allowed for her technical defence. The organisation says prosecutors have hastily assembled a criminal case over an administrative discrepancy of 6,100 dollars, and its leaders have denounced political harassment to prevent them from taking part in the coming elections. --- What remains unknown --- The exact place where González is being held remains unknown, as does whether her technical defence has been able to reach her and how the formulation of charges will proceed. --- Unanswered questions --- Where is Luisa González being held and has her technical defence been able to reach her yet? What concrete evidence supports the money laundering accusation? How will this detention affect the opposition's participation in the November 29 elections? --- EPM analysis --- Over this same case, the Electoral Disputes Tribunal barred Citizen Revolution from taking part in the November elections and sanctioned the organisation for nine months. González sought the presidency in 2023 and in 2025 and lost in the runoff against Noboa. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, detaining the opposition's leading figure before dawn, 38 days before an election, demands visible guarantees: a known place of detention, immediate access for her defence and charges explained with evidence. The organisation maintains that the underlying issue is an administrative discrepancy of 6,100 dollars, and that distance between the figure and the measure requires maximum transparency. Investigating is legitimate, but without transparency each step weakens trust in institutions.
