United States conditions its support for Milei on Argentina's 2027 elections

--- The context --- The United States will maintain its economic backing for Javier Milei's government until the end of 2027, the year Argentina holds presidential elections, but warns that its continuity will depend on the election results and the country's political course. --- The facts --- The US ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, explained at an energy forum in the province of Neuquén that his country plans to mobilise up to twenty billion dollars in investment and financing before the end of 2027, aimed mainly at energy, mining, transport and infrastructure. The figure expands the seven billion dollars announced previously. Around six billion would go to a large natural gas production and export project run by the state oil company YPF in Vaca Muerta, one of the country's main reserves. --- The positions --- The announcement comes at a time of uncertainty: Argentina continues to struggle to access international financing, investor distrust has grown and the country is paying its highest financing interest of the last year. It is not the first time Washington has tied its help to Argentine ballots: in October 2025, President Donald Trump already conditioned backing on the results of Milei's party in that year's legislative elections. --- What remains unknown --- It remains to be known what concrete conditions Washington will set to maintain support after 2027 and whether the announced funds will start arriving before the presidential elections. --- Unanswered questions --- What will happen to the financing if Argentina's political course changes after the 2027 elections? When will the announced twenty billion dollars start to move? How much of it will actually reach the Vaca Muerta gas project? --- EPM analysis --- The pattern repeats itself: broad economic backing in exchange for political continuity, announced just as Argentina's financing cost reaches its highest level of the last year. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, conditioning aid on an election result turns financing into an instrument of pressure on Argentine voters, who must be able to decide without anyone putting a price on their vote. Washington's backing is an opportunity for the country's energy and infrastructure, but its electoral fine print weakens the idea that this is an alliance between partners rather than support with an owner. Argentina needs those funds; it also needs its course to be set by its citizens.
