Haiti anti-gang mission fields 2,181 personnel and targets 5,500

--- The context --- Criminal structures hold wide areas of Haitian territory under their control, and the Haitian National Police previously went through periods of extreme difficulty without international backing of this scale, Dominican authorities recalled as they presented the multinational deployment. --- The facts --- The international mission tasked with fighting criminal gangs in Haiti currently has some 2,181 personnel deployed and expects to reach approximately 5,500 members over the next three months, according to Dominican authorities. Authorized by the United Nations Security Council, the mission includes police, military and civilian components. Its responsibilities include operations against the gangs, protection of critical infrastructure, combating illicit activities and facilitating humanitarian access across Haitian territory. --- The positions --- During LA Semanal con la Prensa, the foreign minister explained that the force aims to support Haitian security bodies in recovering territorial control, naming Bangladesh, Chad, Jamaica, Guatemala, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and El Salvador among the participants. President Luis Abinader stressed that the international presence matters for containing criminal groups and reiterated Dominican logistical and humanitarian support. --- What remains unknown --- It is not yet known how the announced growth of the deployment will be completed in detail, nor what concrete results have been achieved on the ground in recovering territorial control from the armed organizations. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the mission reach approximately 5,500 members within the next three months? Will it manage to recover territorial control in the areas dominated by criminal structures? What will change for the Haitian National Police once the international backing grows stronger? --- EPM analysis --- The planned jump from some 2,181 personnel to approximately 5,500 marks the difference between a containment presence and a force with a real capacity to dispute territory with armed organizations, provided that support for Haitian security bodies translates into sustained results on the ground. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the announced strengthening can become the decisive moment the president described only if the increase in personnel arrives in full and on time, because a half-deployed mission contains but does not recover territory, and the Haitian National Police already knows too well what it means to face the gangs without backing of this magnitude beside it.
