--- The context --- The Princess Royal will visit Cape Town on 3 and 4 November 2026 as President of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth, which connects agricultural societies across the Commonwealth. Her schedule combines a sector conference with engagements designed to highlight links between the UK and South Africa and to put farmers and small businesses at the centre. --- The facts --- She will attend the 31st Commonwealth Agriculture Conference, which brings together agricultural leaders and the next generation of farmers from across the Commonwealth. The conference will focus on leadership, climate resilience and the future of global agriculture, three themes that will shape the two days scheduled in Cape Town. During the visit she will meet township entrepreneurs supported by a digital market access programme that helps small businesses use digital tools and e-commerce platforms to reach customers across South Africa. She will also visit a stud farm in the Western Cape to learn about a new bilateral trade protocol for the export and import of horses between South Africa and the UK, and meet the last known World War II veteran in South Africa and his family, and thank him for his service. --- The positions --- Acting British High Commissioner to South Africa Lisa Weedon said in reported remarks that they are delighted to welcome the Princess Royal for her second visit in two years and sixth overall. In that view, the visit is about people, the farmers, entrepreneurs and veterans whose stories show the depth of ties between the two countries, and it is a chance to celebrate what the UK and South Africa can achieve together, from new trade opportunities to support for township entrepreneurs. --- What remains unknown --- No concrete agreements from the conference have yet been detailed, nor have measurable results from the horse trade protocol been set out. It also remains unclear what new commitments the digital market access programme, delivered by 22 on Sloan, will take on, or how many entrepreneurs will take part in the meetings. There will be no media access to the engagements at the British High Commission, and official photographs and video will be made available after the visit. --- Unanswered questions --- What concrete agreements will emerge from the 31st conference for Commonwealth farmers? How will the new bilateral protocol change horse trade between South Africa and the UK? How many small businesses will sell more thanks to the digital market access programme? --- EPM analysis --- The programme mixes diplomacy, agriculture and trade in a single agenda. The agricultural part provides the multilateral forum, the stud farm visit provides the bilateral trade component and the meeting with entrepreneurs provides the social dimension, centred on digital skills for underserved communities. The gesture towards the veteran adds personal recognition that the British representation itself placed at the heart of the meaning of the visit. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the value of this visit lies in linking agriculture to concrete opportunities for people often left out of large agreements. Bringing together leaders and young farmers, backing entrepreneurs from underserved communities and opening trade routes points to cooperation that can be measured in skills, customers and jobs. The challenge will be ensuring that what is announced in Cape Town becomes lasting results for producers and small businesses in both countries, beyond two days of meetings and official photographs made available afterwards.
