Alckmin calls Flavio Bolsonaro departure after defeat incomprehensible

Vice President Geraldo Alckmin called Flávio Bolsonaro departure from Brazil after losing the runoff incomprehensible.

--- The context --- Brazil has closed a presidential runoff that left Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, leader of the Liberal Party, without the presidency and on course to lose his Senate seat. The outcome opened a debate about respect for election results and about the future of a leader who has held public office since 2003. --- The facts --- Vice President Geraldo Alckmin spoke to the press on Tuesday at the Alvorada Palace after the celebration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva turning 81. There he described Bolsonaro leaving the country as unintelligible and incomprehensible and argued that whoever loses thanks the voters, congratulates the opponent and moves on, because that is democracy. Bolsonaro will lose his Senate seat in February, when the new legislature begins, and it will be the first time since 2003 that he does not hold public office. A victory for him would have halted the investigations against him, since presidents cannot answer during their mandate for acts prior to taking office. --- The positions --- Lula also questioned the departure and described it as shameful in terms attributed in coverage of the event. He argued that whoever has nothing to hide has nothing to fear, regretted the lack of respect toward voters and democracy, and recalled that he remained in Brazil after losing to Fernando Collor in 1989 and to Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 1994 and 1998. Lawmakers from the Workers Party asked Justice Alexandre de Moraes to order preventive detention for Bolsonaro and to include him on the Interpol red notice list, in an investigation into alleged foreign financing of his campaign. A State Department spokesperson confirmed that the department headed by Marco Rubio will issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family. --- What remains unknown --- His exact whereabouts remain unknown. Rogério Marinho said the party has no information about where he is and that he only received a text message in which Bolsonaro said he wanted to take some time and would later speak with the leadership. Lawmaker Mauricio Marcon claimed that he took a flight to go into exile in the United States, without official confirmation. --- Unanswered questions --- Where is Flávio Bolsonaro and when will he speak with his party? Will any authority confirm that his final destination is the United States? What will Justice Alexandre de Moraes decide on preventive detention and the Interpol notice? --- EPM analysis --- From a perspective centred on institutions, the episode tests peaceful acceptance of defeat as a basic democratic norm. The government reaction seeks to set that standard and to link remaining in the country with answering to the courts and voters. The judicial outcome will determine whether the debate ends as controversy or escalates into crisis. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Flávio Bolsonaro departure after losing the runoff weakens democratic normality because it replaces recognition of the result with absence and silence. Alckmin and Lula have set out a clear position by questioning that gesture, while his own party admits it does not know his whereabouts. Without official confirmation of his destination or a definitive judicial ruling, the responsible course is to stick to verified facts, demand transparency from all sides and await the decisions that belong to the competent institutions of Brazil.
