Colombia expels 98 foreign nationals after operations in Medellín

--- The context --- The operations were carried out in Medellín and President Abelardo De La Espriella took part in them, according to Migración Colombia. The agency explained that the 98 foreign nationals expelled represented a high risk to the safety of the population, so the measures were carried out after their detention. --- The facts --- The procedure was led by the director general, José Luis Castañeda. The people were transferred to the border of Norte de Santander on two flights of the Colombian Air Force, with support from the National Army, and in Venezuelan territory they were placed at the disposal of the migration authorities of their country. It was identified that two of these foreign nationals had outstanding arrest warrants for drug trafficking and for conspiracy to commit a crime. According to Migración Colombia, 73 had records of arrests, with an accumulated total of 241 records: 198 for narcotics, 19 for theft, seven for injuries and 17 for other conduct. In addition, 98 had corrective measures from the National Police, for a total of 996, and 63 had already entered Protection Transfer Centers (CTP). A total of 80% were in an irregular migration status. --- The positions --- The agency argued, in an attributed assessment, that the results show the importance of strengthening migration verification and coordination with police and judicial authorities in the face of repeated behavior that affects public safety and coexistence. Director Castañeda said that the Government is committed to tackling this problem. In attributed indirect speech, he added that the agency is strengthening its powers and that, following the instructions of President Abelardo De La Espriella, it coordinates with authorities across the territory to restore tranquility to Colombians, and he maintained that the Miracle in the Regions is a reality. --- What remains unknown --- It is not known how follow-up will be handled after the handover in Venezuelan territory or whether there will be a public individual review of the measures. Nor is it known how the effect on coexistence in Medellín will be measured. --- Unanswered questions --- How was the irregular status of the 80% cited verified case by case? What due process guarantees did the 98 people have during the transfer to Norte de Santander? Will follow-up be published on those handed over to the Venezuelan migration authorities? --- EPM analysis --- That 73 people account for 241 records and 63 had already entered Protection Transfer Centers shows repetition, but also raises questions about prevention. Expulsion resolves a concrete presence; lasting coexistence depends on verification working before cases accumulate. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the expulsion of 98 foreign nationals reported by Migración Colombia should be assessed by its verifiable data and by its guarantees: the procedure led by José Luis Castañeda, the transfer on two flights and the handover in Venezuelan territory are documented by the agency, and the records described are serious. At the same time, transparency over each case and respect for due process are an inseparable part of a legitimate and sustainable migration policy over time.
