Government delivers nearly RD$360 million to former Falcondo workers

The Dominican Government delivered nearly RD$360 million in Bonao to pay pending labor benefits to laid-off workers and pensioners of Falconbridge Dominicana.

--- The context --- For years, laid-off workers and pensioners of Falconbridge Dominicana, known as Falcondo, waited for pending labor benefits to be paid. That wait turned a recognized right into a persistent demand in Monseñor Nouel, where the company shaped the working lives of many families. --- The facts --- The Dominican Government delivered nearly RD$360 million to pay those benefits during a ceremony in the municipality of Bonao, Monseñor Nouel province. The resources are intended for laid-off workers and pensioners of Falcondo, in line with the commitments that prompted the initiative. The delivery included Labor Minister Eddy Olivares Ortega and was coordinated by the Ministry of the Presidency, MINPRE, and the Patrimonial Fund of Reformed Companies, FONPER. Also attending were José Ignacio Paliza, governor Adela Tejada and mayor Eberto Núñez, along with other authorities. --- The positions --- Olivares Ortega attributed the initiative to President Luis Abinader's commitment to Dominican workers and praised coordination between institutions and labor representatives. He also stressed the importance of dialogue and tripartism to reach agreements and respond to workers' demands. --- What remains unknown --- It is not specified how many laid-off workers and pensioners will receive the resources or what individual amount corresponds to each beneficiary. Nor is there a detailed payment schedule or confirmation that all pending commitments will be settled. --- Unanswered questions --- How many beneficiaries will receive part of the nearly RD$360 million delivered in Bonao? What will the payment schedule be and how will each worker verify their case? Will all pending benefits be settled or will claims remain in Monseñor Nouel? --- EPM analysis --- The delivery focuses attention on a long-standing labor debt and on the State's capacity to respond through institutional coordination. The ceremony in Bonao sought to show a joint response to claims that left beneficiaries waiting for their rights. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, paying labor benefits owed for years is not a discretionary gesture but the late fulfillment of an obligation to laid-off workers and pensioners who sustained a mining operation important to Monseñor Nouel. The value of this delivery will be measured by whether it is completed in full, by clarity for each beneficiary, and by ensuring that no recognized right is postponed again by procedures or by a lack of institutional follow-up after the ceremony held in Bonao.
