Germany backs Kampnagel renewal in Hamburg with 60 million euros

Culture minister of state Wolfram Weimer took part in the groundbreaking for the Kampnagel expansion and renovation in Hamburg.

--- The context --- Kampnagel is a Hamburg cultural factory known worldwide as an international production house. Its programme covers contemporary performing arts, concerts, conferences and festivals, spanning trends in theatre, dance and performance, music, visual arts and architecture. For Germany's federal government, strengthening cultural infrastructure is a central goal: through sustainable investment it supports institutions and monuments of national importance that draw education and tourism. --- The facts --- Culture minister of state Wolfram Weimer took part in the official groundbreaking for the expansion and renovation of the Kampnagel international production house in Hamburg. His ministry is supporting the construction work with up to 60 million euros in funding. Total costs for the renovation and expansion come to around 168 million euros, financed by the federal government together with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Working with the Paris architecture practice Lacaton & Vassal, the halls of the former machine factory will be extensively modernised, expanded and adapted to rising needs. The works will be carried out while performances continue. The project is planned as an artistically accompanied performative construction site. --- The positions --- Weimer said Kampnagel is the largest subsidised construction project of his ministry this year and that the support is especially deserved. According to him, the venue has achieved outstanding things over many years from an attitude of resistance, even towards politics, and great art has emerged from that. The minister added that Kampnagel is far more than a beacon of the independent and cultural scene, and that what happens there is truly world class. He also expressed his delight that his ministry is supporting this important project with 60 million euros and that construction is now starting. --- What remains unknown --- The announcement sets out no timetable or completion date, nor the exact split of costs between the federal government and Hamburg, beyond the ministry's contribution of up to 60 million euros. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the Kampnagel expansion and renovation be completed? How exactly are the costs shared between the federal government and Hamburg? What concrete changes will the modernisation bring for the centre's programme and audiences? --- EPM analysis --- The investment joins industrial heritage with contemporary production: the halls of a former machine factory are adapted to growing demands without halting performances, and the performative concept turns the building work into part of the programme. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the commitment to Kampnagel is right to treat cultural infrastructure as long-term investment rather than optional spending: sustaining with public funds a centre that produces contemporary art of international reach strengthens the independent scene, education and Hamburg's appeal alike. Keeping the doors open during the works, with artistic accompaniment, protects the continuity of a venue that has grown out of resistance and turned that attitude into first-rate creation, and it sets a demanding standard for how public money should care for culture.
