Colombian employment grows in September while farming falls back

Unemployment in Colombia fell to 8 % in September and employed people reached 24.24 million, with 322.000 more workers than a year earlier, according to DANE.

--- The context --- The Colombian labor market showed signs of recovery in September, although the progress did not reach every branch of activity equally. According to results from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), growth was driven mainly by trade, manufacturing and transport, while the agricultural sector recorded the largest reduction in employed people during the month. --- The facts --- The unemployment rate stood at 8 %, compared with 8.2 % in the same month of 2025, and the number of employed people reached 24.24 million, an increase of 322.000 workers from the previous year. Trade and vehicle repair led job creation: they added 162.000 employed people, reached about 4.2 million people, represented 17.3 % of the national total and contributed 0.7 percentage points to the change in the employed population. Manufacturing added 100.000 additional workers and reached nearly 2.77 million employed people, with a share of 11.4 % of national employment and a contribution of 0.4 percentage points. Transport and storage added 84.000 employed people, reaching approximately 1.94 million, equivalent to 8 % of the national total. Professional, scientific, technical and administrative service activities also grew, with 73.000 additional employed people, as did electricity, gas, water and waste management, with 57.000 new workers. Other increases were smaller: financial and insurance activities added 47.000, real estate 42.000, accommodation and food services 20.000 and construction 15.000. At the other extreme, agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry and fishing lost 184.000 employed people, stood at nearly 3.19 million people, equivalent to 13.1 % of national employment, and subtracted 0.8 percentage points from the total change. Arts and entertainment activities fell by 49.000, the public administration, education and health group lost 23.000, and information and communications declined by 21.000. --- The positions --- The reading left by the DANE figures is twofold: the recovery is real, but it is concentrated in urban and service branches, while farming and several cultural and public activities lose workers. That difference matters because the positive national balance coexists with a sharp setback in the very sector that subtracted the most jobs in September. --- What remains unknown --- The available information does not explain the causes of the agricultural decline or specify whether the loss was concentrated in a particular activity within the sector. It is also unknown whether the pace of job creation in trade and manufacturing will hold in the coming months. --- Unanswered questions --- What explains the loss of 184.000 employed people in the agricultural sector? Can trade and industry sustain this pace of job creation? Will the arts and service activities that also lost workers recover? --- EPM analysis --- The central fact is how uneven the advance is: almost all of the momentum came from a few branches, and the largest of them, trade, contributed 0.7 percentage points on its own. When a single sector supports much of the growth, the strength of the whole depends on that engine not stopping. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, September brings good news with a clear warning: there are 322.000 more employed people and a lower unemployment rate than a year earlier, but the recovery is not reaching farming, which lost 184.000 workers and still accounts for 13.1 % of national employment. An improvement that leaves out such a large sector remains incomplete, and the pending task is for growth in trade and industry to coexist with an agricultural recovery that does not yet appear in the DANE figures.
