Harassment attack on police in Totoró turns a Sunday into fear in Cauca

Armed men harassed the police station of Totoró, in eastern Cauca, this Sunday, November 1, in an attack attributed to Farc dissident structures.

--- The context --- Totoró, a municipality in eastern Cauca, lived through an afternoon this Sunday, November 1, that shattered its Sunday routine. Armed men harassed the police station, located in the center of town, while streets, shops and sports venues held much of the community. --- The facts --- According to national press reports, the harassment began at around 3:30 in the afternoon and was attributed to dissident structures under the command of alias Iván Mordisco, in particular the Dagoberto Ramos front. The attackers fired on the station and officers responded with their service weapons, after the public force activated its defense plan. Testimonies gathered in the area indicate that the situation lasted nearly two hours, although there is no official statement specifying its duration. So far, according to the information available, no police officers or civilians were reported wounded. Videos that circulated carry bursts of gunfire and detonations while people run for safety. One recording shows a synthetic-turf field where a friendly match was under way: spectators sought refuge in the stands and some players lay flat on the ground. Other residents sheltered in nearby homes and businesses and recorded the moment on their cell phones, while motorcyclists and drivers tried to leave the area. Amid the armed action, a cylinder was found on the road linking Totoró with Popayán, the Transversal del Libertador corridor, just over 33 kilometers from the departmental capital. The cylinder was painted in the colors of the Colombian flag, but the available information does not establish whether it contained explosives or whether specialized units removed it. --- The positions --- Social leaders who were consulted said it is worrying that the harassment and the combat that followed took place in the midst of the community, with numerous people in shops and sports venues. They also indicated that fear grew because the shots were heard in different points of the town center. --- What remains unknown --- Social leaders also denounced the alleged presence of dissident members in the rural district of Gabriel López, in Totoró, where according to those testimonies leaflets referring to that organization were allegedly handed out and banners installed with warnings aimed at young people considering joining the public force. Those complaints had no official confirmation, and it was also unknown whether mobility restrictions would be ordered on the road corridor. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the authorities deliver a full official statement on the duration and scope of the harassment? Did the cylinder found on the Transversal del Libertador contain explosives, and has it been removed from the road? What protection will the inhabitants of Gabriel López receive in the face of the reports of alleged armed presence? --- EPM analysis --- Totoró exposes a constant of the conflict in Cauca: the confrontation no longer happens far from the population, but in its very center, among shops, fields and homes. When a friendly match ends with players lying on the ground, the harm settles into daily life. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Totoró's afternoon sums up the State's most urgent debt in eastern Cauca: protecting the civilian population trapped between the fire of armed groups and the response of the public force. That no wounded were reported does not lessen the seriousness of a harassment attack in the middle of a town center, with a cylinder of unknown contents on the main road and unconfirmed complaints in the rural area. The answer must go beyond the operational report: permanent presence, verifiable protection and official clarity on every fact of this Sunday.
