Carlson Says Trump May Decide on a Nuclear Strike Against Iran

--- The context --- Early on November 2, commentator Tucker Carlson published a long post, viewed more than 16 million times within hours, claiming the United States may be within days of a nuclear strike on Iran against the fortified Pickaxe Mountain site. He cited no documents and relied on one unnamed informed observer. Neither the White House nor Israel has confirmed the claim. --- The facts --- Carlson argued that no conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of granite to reach the tunnels, leaving a nuclear strike as the only military option. He wrote that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing hard for such a strike and, according to the observer, calls Trump about it every day. In his account, Trump is likely to decide by Nov. 7 and is hesitating. The public record offers a direct counterpoint. On Oct. 15, Trump ruled out using nuclear weapons on Iran and said it would not be necessary. On Saturday, he said the United States still has to take care of one or two Iranian nuclear sites and could do so in ten minutes, with a plan already in place. Reporting described a tough call that Saturday with Netanyahu pressing for a strike after Tuesday's midterm elections while Trump wanted talks to play out. Both offices declined to comment. --- The positions --- Carlson placed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Central Command chief Brad Cooper among those pushing to restart major combat operations, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and intelligence director John Ratcliffe following Netanyahu's lead. Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff, he wrote, argue that a deal with Iran can still be made. --- What remains unknown --- The site itself is narrower than the scenario built around it. Pickaxe Mountain, or Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La, is a tunnel complex about two kilometers south of the Natanz enrichment plant that has not been struck. Available analyses estimate a depth of at least 100 meters, close to the 300 feet cited, and October imagery showed the eastern entrances still blocked by earth, suggesting the site is neither operational nor under major construction. Those analyses favor bunker-busting strikes on ventilation shafts and entrances. --- Unanswered questions --- Is there any official confirmation that a decision of this magnitude is genuinely on the table? What weight should a claim of this scale carry on one unnamed observer and no documents? How far does the pressure attributed to Netanyahu reflect his domestic political arithmetic? What room remains for a negotiated outcome if the deadlines described were accurate? --- EPM analysis --- Carlson ties the alleged pressure to Israeli politics: after the October vote left no bloc with a majority, Netanyahu's bloc won 53 of 120 seats against 48 for the opposition and 19 for Arab-led parties, and would need 61 to govern. He also predicts severe fallout: contamination of the Persian Gulf, poisoned water for 100 million people, 11 of roughly 850 supertankers already damaged in Hormuz in October. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, a claim capable of shaking the security of millions demands a standard of proof far higher than one anonymous source, however large its audience. The responsible course is to separate what is confirmed from what is merely attributed, resisting both alarmism and complacency. Until Washington confirms or refutes the account with evidence, it remains an influential commentator's version of a decision that, if it existed, would be the gravest of this presidency.
