Alleged dissidents reportedly took over a school in Cedeño

Cecodap reported that alleged members of the Segunda Marquetalia reportedly took over a Fe y Alegría school in Cedeño, Bolívar, with teachers and families…

Alleged members of the Segunda Marquetalia, a FARC dissident group, reportedly took over the facilities of a Fe y Alegría school in the mining municipality of Cedeño, in Bolívar state, in southern Venezuela, according to a complaint by Cecodap. --- The context --- As Carlos Trapani, general coordinator of Cecodap, recalled, the Venezuelan state admitted a year ago that members of the ELN and FARC dissidents operated in Los Pijiguaos, where the assault on the Fe y Alegría site was recorded. Trapani said that context helps measure what is happening today in La Batea and Punta Brava, Indigenous towns in Cedeño, with armed men, controls over residents, threats, detentions, the departure of families and teachers, and a direct impact on a school. --- The facts --- Trapani said teachers and families have had to leave the community for security reasons and that, for children, the school stopped being a safe space. In August, spokespeople for the Indigenous community reported the kidnapping and murder of local leader Julio Rodríguez by men from the FARC dissidents, who also attacked residents with drones and explosive devices. --- The positions --- Cecodap demanded a response broader than removing the armed men from the campus: protecting families and teachers, identifying children at risk, guaranteeing educational continuity, preventing recruitment and exploitation, assisting those who have left, and investigating the facts. A professor at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello stressed that the state was aware of this situation since October 2025 and argued that protecting children does not begin when violence enters a school, but requires anticipating it to prevent it from reaching the school. --- What remains unknown --- The interim government of Delcy Rodríguez has not taken a position on this event. There is also no independent official confirmation of the reported takeover and no public detail on students, teachers, or families affected, or on the condition of the facilities in Cedeño. --- Unanswered questions --- How many children and adolescents have missed classes because of this reported situation? What concrete protection measures will be applied for the families and teachers who left the community? How will educational continuity and prevention of recruitment be guaranteed while the reported armed presence persists? --- EPM analysis --- When a campus stops being safe, the harm is not limited to a building allegedly occupied: it reaches the routine, learning, and permanence of children in their community, with departures that anticipate prolonged educational loss without early protection. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the most serious aspect of what was reported in Cedeño is that the school stopped fulfilling its protective role before any official response became known. Without a public position from the interim government, Cecodap's complaint remains the main available record and requires child protection to be treated as anticipatory work, not a reactive measure. Guaranteeing classes, protecting teachers and families, and preventing risks for children and adolescents should be the immediate measure behind any decision about the school and its nearby community.
