A total of 44 Honduran citizens were expelled from Colombia after being caught in illegal fishing activities near Cayo Serranilla, in the San Andrés archipelago, in a National Navy operation that left 20 vessels seized and 241 kilograms of marine resources confiscated, according to the Navy. --- The context --- The foreigners were intercepted by Coast Guard units in Colombian territorial sea waters, north of the archipelago, where they were carrying out extraction work with diving equipment. They were transporting queen conch, lobster, crab and fish of different sizes, according to the official information. --- The facts --- The operation began after a foreign fishing vessel acting as a mother ship was detected, from which small boats, known as pangas, were deployed to carry out the fishing activities. The Navy verified with the General Maritime Directorate, through the Port Captaincy of San Andrés, that the ship had no permission to enter Colombian waters or authorization to extract fishing resources. Upon noticing the presence of the authorities, the fishing vessel fled and left in the area the people who were in the smaller boats. A Rapid Reaction Unit of the San Andrés Coast Guard Station intercepted the pangas and found the foreigners during the extraction work. A total of 20 pangas and 143 diving tanks were seized. --- The positions --- Navy captain José Manuel Muñoz Vesga, acting commander of the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, said the procedure made it possible to detect the Honduran citizens in the act. President Abelardo De La Espriella reported on his X account that the foreigners were placed at the disposal of Migración Colombia and expelled from the national territory on Sunday, November 1, and held that the Government will enforce immigration and environmental rules. --- What remains unknown --- The detainees and the confiscated material were taken to The Cove dock, where an inspection was carried out with the participation of Coralina and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Fisheries. The inventory established the confiscation of 142 kilograms of queen conch, 77 kilograms of lobster and 16 kilograms of crab, in addition to six kilograms of fish. Migración Colombia verified the identity and immigration status of the foreigners before completing their expulsion. --- Unanswered questions --- Will additional proceedings be opened over the exploitation of species under a closed season? What will happen with the mother ship that fled the area? Will controls be reinforced on other cays of the archipelago? --- EPM analysis --- The Navy announced that it will maintain maritime controls in the area to pursue illegal fishing and protect the resources of the archipelago. Maritime surveillance seeks to protect the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, recognized by Unesco for its biodiversity, according to the source. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the Cayo Serranilla operation protects two goods at once: sovereignty over the waters of the archipelago and the resources of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, among them the queen conch, a species that remains under a closed season. The expulsion of the 44 Honduran citizens was completed after the verification of identity and immigration status by Migración Colombia, and with the inspection of the confiscated material together with the environmental and fisheries authorities of the archipelago.
