Average Social Security affiliation in October exceeded 22.6 million, with 22.624.165 people affiliated, a year-on-year rise of 3.6% and gains in female…

--- The context --- Spain closed October with its labor market at a series high, with average affiliation above 22.6 million. The figure comes with gains for women, for foreign workers and in lower temporary employment. The seasonally adjusted series has now risen for 69 consecutive months and daily records stayed above 22.6 million on the 8th and, without interruption, from the 13th to the 29th of October, a pattern that strengthens the reading of a solid month for employment. --- The facts --- Specifically, there were 22.624.165 people affiliated on average, after adding 186.612 compared with September, the largest increase in an October in the series. Over the last year affiliation rose by 3.6%, with 784.573 more affiliates than in the same month of 2025, while the seasonally adjusted series reached 22.571.105 affiliates after adding 90.309 in the month. Foreign workers account for 16.4% of the total, with 3.699.878 affiliates on average, 63.899 more than in September and 598.378 more than a year earlier. At the end of October, foreign affiliates registered in connection with the extraordinary regularization stood at 490.586, with Colombia as the leading origin at 27.6%, followed by Venezuela at 15.7%, and with Catalonia and Madrid carrying the greatest weight. --- The positions --- From a perspective focused on labor inclusion, the advance is read as a broader incorporation into formal employment, with women at 10.712.135 affiliates, 47.4% of the total, and with temporary employment down to 12.1%, compared with 28.3% in October 2021, which is interpreted as an improvement in contract stability. --- What remains unknown --- It remains to be seen how affiliation evolves in the coming months and whether the year-on-year pace of 3.6% holds as seasonal conditions change. The full path also remains to be clarified for the 557.410 affiliates who since April have been registered for at least one day within the process identified in the October data. --- Unanswered questions --- Can growth that adds 784.573 affiliates in a year be sustained without losing momentum in the most dynamic sectors? What medium-term effect will the incorporation of the 490.586 affiliates linked to the extraordinary regularization have on the structure of employment? Will temporary employment keep falling among workers under 30, now at 19.9% compared with 51.7% five years ago? --- EPM analysis --- By activity, Construction led at 7.3% year-on-year combining the General Scheme and the self-employed, followed by Real Estate Activities at 5.8%. In the General Scheme the advance was 3.8%, with 704.996 more affiliates, and the self-employed grew by 2.3% to 3.501.598. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the October record matters above all for its composition, because it combines more total employment with more women in work, a growing foreign contribution and less temporary employment than in recent years. That combination points to a broader and more integrated labor market, although its lasting strength will depend on sustained growth, on stability also reaching young workers and on the contributor-to-pensioner ratio, now at 2.51, holding at its highest level since 2011.
