Solar light reaches millions of off-grid homes in Bangladesh

United Kingdom International Climate Finance is helping Bangladesh sustain clean, affordable electricity in rural off-grid communities.

--- The context --- Across rural Bangladesh, the national grid does not reach every community, and many families have long relied on polluting fuels for light and cooking. For people off the grid, clean, affordable electricity is not a luxury, but a basic condition for studying, working and living more safely after dark. --- The facts --- For more than a decade, the Solar Home System programme has brought reliable, clean electricity to millions of people beyond the reach of the national grid, helping households move away from polluting diesel and kerosene. International Climate Finance from the United Kingdom helps Bangladesh sustain that progress in rural communities. British support through the Ci-Dev programme helps clean energy projects earn income by selling carbon credits that represent reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. To date, around 3.3 million solar home systems have been supported in Bangladesh as part of Ci-Dev, overcoming frequent power cuts and saving households money on energy bills. --- The positions --- The approach described puts energy access at the centre: British support has helped more than 10 million people gain improved access to clean energy. From that perspective, valuing long-term solutions drives action against climate change and protects first those communities that have the least. --- What remains unknown --- The case does not detail how benefits are shared among communities or what support households will receive when systems need maintenance or replacement. It also does not specify how much future progress will depend on carbon income and how much on other finance still to be secured. --- Unanswered questions --- Will solar electricity reach every community still off the grid? Will households keep their systems running long term without unaffordable costs? What new finance will open up so access does not stall? --- EPM analysis --- The social reach is its greatest strength: more than 340 megawatts of clean capacity installed and more than 1 million tonnes of emissions reduced, the equivalent of 4% of London's total emissions for a year, translate into real light for real families. Climate justice is measured in lit homes, not only in global totals. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this case shows that climate cooperation matters when it reaches the daily lives of people living far from the grid, with clean light at home and less smoke in the kitchen. The challenge now is to make sure that access does not depend on a passing push, but on systems able to sustain themselves, reach more communities and keep prices affordable for the most vulnerable families for many years, and that no community is left behind simply for living far from the national grid.
