Colombia expels 80 foreigners from Bogota and ten are captured in Venezuela

Migracion Colombia expelled 80 foreign nationals identified in procedures across 15 localities of Bogota.

--- The context --- Bogota was the scene of a migration verification operation across different sectors, in a context where authorities link migration control, security and coexistence. The intervention brought together several institutions and included accompaniment from the District Ombudsman Office, a relevant element when assessing guarantees and due process for foreign nationals. --- The facts --- Migracion Colombia confirmed the expulsion of 80 foreign nationals identified through verification procedures carried out in different sectors of Bogota. According to the authorities, the group consisted of 74 men and six women, who together had more than 1,100 corrective measures on record for conduct contrary to security and coexistence, accumulated in official databases consulted during the joint intervention in the capital. The procedures took place in 15 localities of Bogota and identified people with different records in the authorities databases. Reported conduct included carrying weapons and sharp objects, infractions related to psychoactive substances and disrespect toward authority. There were also judicial annotations for alleged theft, drug trafficking and extortion, and some had accumulated up to 90 corrective measures. The group included two women and one man who had finished serving sentences for criminal conspiracy, qualified and aggravated theft and extortion. Afterward, the 80 were transferred to the CATAM military base, boarded an aircraft bound for Cucuta and were taken to the Atanasio Girardot International Bridge for handover to Venezuela, where ten were captured under outstanding warrants for crimes allegedly committed there. --- The positions --- Migracion Colombia said the intervention was carried out jointly with the National Police, the Army and the Bogota Mayor Office. Its director general, Jose Luis Castaneda, said indirectly that the agency will maintain joint work with the Public Force and local administrations to strengthen migration controls. The operation was part of the security actions announced by the Government of President Abelardo de la Espriella, according to the authorities. --- What remains unknown --- The source does not detail how an individual review of each file was guaranteed in every case, nor does it specify the prior migration status of each expelled person. It also does not report on any appeals that may have been filed, on the situation of the six women after the handover, or on the process that the ten captured by the authorities in Venezuela will now face. --- Unanswered questions --- Was the situation of each of the 80 people reviewed individually before their expulsion was ordered? What due process guarantees and accompaniment were applied during the procedures in the 15 localities? What will happen now to the ten captured in Venezuela and to the rest of the group handed over at the border? --- EPM analysis --- The case combines a high number of corrective measures with a broad operation and a border handover that led to additional captures. The presence of the District Ombudsman Office and joint work show coordination, but the available information focuses on records and reported conduct. Data are still missing on case by case review and follow up after the handover. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, a firm migration policy gains legitimacy when each expulsion rests on a verifiable individual review, with clear guarantees and public information about the destination of the people handed over. The record of more than 1,100 corrective measures explains the concern for coexistence in Bogota, but it does not replace due process. The capture of ten people in Venezuela adds a judicial dimension that requires transparent follow up, so that migration control protects security without weakening the basic rights of those subject to these joint procedures.
