Fighting in Timba leaves two soldiers dead and three wounded

Two soldiers, Germán Andrés Mora Cubillos and John Janer Moreno Guacarí, died and three others were wounded in clashes between the Army and the Jaime Martínez…

--- The context --- Timba, a rural area of Jamundí in Valle del Cauca, became the centre of a sustained military operation against the Jaime Martínez structure, a dissident group to which the authorities attribute violent actions and attacks in the southwest of the country. According to the Army, that area is used by the structure for its mobility, its sustainment and the development of illicit economies. The deterioration of security in Jamundí had already been warned about by the Ombudsman's Office. On 15 October, the office issued Early Warning 023 of 2026, in which it pointed to the territorial control exercised by the Jaime Martínez front and to the risks derived from the presence of other illegal armed groups in the municipality. --- The facts --- Two soldiers died and three others were wounded during clashes between the National Army and the dissidents in the Timba sector, after more than 24 hours of sustained military operations in this part of the southwest of the country. The most recent report from the Military Forces confirmed the death of the service members. The fallen soldiers were identified as Germán Andrés Mora Cubillos and John Janer Moreno Guacarí. According to the Army, the other three wounded service members were transferred to a hospital in Cali, where they are receiving medical care, and so far the institution has not provided additional details about their health condition. During the fighting, three members of that organisation also died, among them those identified as alias Pincher and alias Chuzo. The Army also reported the seizure of weapons, ammunition, communications equipment and technological material, and confirmed that troops remain deployed in the sector and that military operations continue. --- The positions --- Troops from the Third Division are taking part in the deployment, with special capabilities from the Air Assault Aviation Division, artillery support and the Colombian Aerospace Force, in coordination with the National Police. According to the Army, the objective of the manoeuvre is to weaken the armed, logistical and financial capabilities of the structure, maintain territorial control and protect the communities of southern Valle del Cauca and northern Cauca. The Valle Governor's Office reported the death of the man identified as alias Pincher, who had been at the head of a mobile column of that dissidence for about two months and was identified as ordering attacks and harassment in the south of the department. Valle governor Dilian Francisca Toro said the man had a record of approximately 18 years. --- What remains unknown --- The available information does not specify the health condition of the three wounded service members transferred to Cali. Nor does it specify whether the two helicopters supporting the operation and which, according to reports, were hit by rifle fire suffered damage that affected their operation. An inter-municipal bus was exposed to crossfire and its passengers threw themselves to the floor to protect themselves, with no reports of injured people inside the vehicle. --- Unanswered questions --- What is the health condition of the three wounded service members receiving care at a hospital in Cali? Did the two helicopters hit by rifle fire during the operation suffer damage that affected their operation? Were any passengers injured on the bus that was exposed to crossfire in Timba? --- EPM analysis --- The Ombudsman's Office warned about drones loaded with explosives, the recruitment of children and adolescents and threats against social leaders and educational communities, and it made 36 recommendations. The warning also included the possible incursion of the 57 Yair Bermúdez front and the transit of urban cells of the ELN. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, what happened in Timba crudely shows that protecting the civilian population cannot be separated from the dispute over territorial control in Jamundí. Two soldiers dead, three wounded and a bus with passengers thrown to the floor amid crossfire confirm that every operation in that area is also fought over the daily lives of those who carry no weapons. Early Warning 023 of 2026, with its 36 recommendations, had already described the risks that are materialising today, and heeding those recommendations with a comprehensive presence, and not only a military one, is the most urgent measure so that Timba stops being a synonym for anguish.
