Early school flu vaccination cuts absence across the United Kingdom

FluSurvey findings show that 47% of people in work or education with flu-like symptoms missed work or school, 14% sought help from a GP or a healthcare…

--- The context --- Flu-like illness disrupts daily life. The United Kingdom health agency has published insights from FluSurvey, its participatory surveillance system, on the wider impact of flu-like illness on people's routines, their work and their education. The underlying reading is preventive. When illness interrupts the working day and the school day, early protection, especially for school children, protects the child, reduces spread into the wider community and shelters those at greater risk of more severe illness, such as grandparents and younger siblings. --- The facts --- Among those in work or education, 47% of people reporting flu-like symptoms missed work or school in previous winter seasons. Most reported that their illness disrupted their daily life, the majority treated their symptoms at home, the majority took medication, most commonly painkillers, and 14% sought help from their GP or a healthcare service. The findings are drawn from the 2023-24 and 2024-25 winter seasons, during which more than 68,000 weekly symptom surveys were completed. FluSurvey relies on members of the public voluntarily reporting their symptoms each week, giving insight into community illness that would otherwise go unseen. More than 7 million children and adults have already had their flu vaccine, which remains the best protection against serious illness. The guide to who is eligible for the free vaccination covers the autumn 2026 campaign. --- The positions --- Becki Green, the agency's principal scientist for respiratory viruses, said in attributed remarks that the findings show the big impact flu-like illnesses can have on daily life and that almost half missed work or school, so vaccination matters also to reduce the wider disruption flu causes every year on workplaces, the economy and education. Amanda Doyle, national director for primary care at the health service in England, said in attributed remarks that flu can mean time away from work, education and family life, and can cause serious illness for those at higher risk, including pregnant women, young children and people with certain long-term health conditions. --- What remains unknown --- The published findings do not state how many days of work or school were lost per person, or how the impact was divided across jobs or age groups. Nor do they say what will happen in the coming weeks, because the course of respiratory viruses cannot easily be predicted. --- Unanswered questions --- How many days of work and school are lost in a season when 47% of people with symptoms miss their activity? Will early vaccination of school children reduce community spread this winter? Will people eligible for a free vaccination, including pregnant women and families with young children, come forward in time? --- EPM analysis --- The progressive reading stresses that prevention works before the harm spreads through homes, classrooms and workplaces. Vaccinating school children as early in the season as possible protects them, helps stop spread to grandparents and younger siblings, and means parents are less likely to take time off work to care for sick children. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the figure that organises this story is the 47% absence rate among people in work or education, because it makes flu a community problem rather than only a clinical one. Vaccinating school children early protects them, slows spread towards grandparents and younger siblings and keeps parents from missing work to care for the sick. With more than 7 million people already vaccinated, the remaining task is reaching everyone eligible for a free vaccination before viruses circulate more widely this winter.
