Sudan: drones, hunger and renewed pressure for a ceasefire

The Security Council meets on Sudan, described as the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis, with drone strikes killing civilians and renewed pressure…

--- The context --- Sudan is described before the Security Council as the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis. Drone strikes are killing civilians from El Obeid to Blue Nile, and famine risk is spreading across Darfur and Kordofan. --- The facts --- 20 million people face acute hunger, with 200,000 at catastrophe levels. More than 700,000 displaced people in Tawila are short of food, water and healthcare. A drone strike near the Ethiopian border killed 41 displaced people on 10 October. --- The positions --- Ambassadors are expected to press yet again for a ceasefire, for safe aid access and for an end to the weapons flows fuelling the conflict. --- What remains unknown --- Famine risk is rising in parts of Darfur and Greater Kordofan. The arms embargo remains confined to Darfur, and sanctions were extended to 11 December. --- Unanswered questions --- Will a ceasefire truly protect civilians? Will aid reach Darfur and Kordofan safely? Will the weapons flows fuelling the conflict finally stop? --- EPM analysis --- Hunger is deepening at the same time as strikes keep killing civilians. Without safe access, aid cannot reach the people facing the most extreme shortages. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this meeting should be judged not by its statements but by whether it opens safe passage for aid and eases hunger where it is already extreme. With 20 million people facing acute hunger, every delay carries a direct human cost. Protecting civilians must come first, with public follow-up on every commitment made before the Security Council.
