Matador accuses Pereira's mayor over his wife's dismissal

Cartoonist Julio César González Quiceno, known as Matador, singled out Mayor Mauricio Salazar after the termination without just cause of his wife's contract…

--- The context --- A new chapter has been added to the controversies of the cartoonist and publicist Julio César González Quiceno, known as Matador, amid the investigations being conducted by the Attorney General's Office over the publication in which he referred to First Lady Ana Lucía Pineda while questioning the destination of the donations received by her foundation to assist those affected by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake of Monday 10 August 2026. --- The facts --- Added to that inquiry is the one opened by the investigative body following the complaint by the government of Abelardo De La Espriella over the alleged commission of five offences after he signed a contract worth 257 million pesos with the Fondo Colombia en Paz during the Petro government. Now the cartoonist has turned against the mayor of Pereira, Mauricio Salazar Peláez, after announcing that his wife was dismissed without just cause from the Aguas y Aguas de Pereira utility company. His reaction became known through a message he published on the night of Friday 16 October on his X account, in which he stated that after 30 years of service the Pereira water company had dismissed his wife without just cause the previous day, that the decision had been approved by its board of directors, and he pointed to Mayor Mauricio Salazar as a member of that board, closing with an invitation to draw conclusions. According to the letter received by his partner, the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Pereira S.A.S. E.S.P. informed her of the decision to terminate her employment contract unilaterally and without just cause, effective at the end of the working day on 15 October 2026, in accordance with article 64 of the Substantive Labour Code and with recognition of the corresponding compensation. The memorandum, dated 14 October and signed by the company's deputy manager, states that the departure corresponded to the Professional II post held by González Quiceno's wife, who headed the Risk Management Subprocess, and that the measure was not due to disciplinary reasons or a failure to perform her duties. --- The positions --- The communication attributes the decision to a determination of the board of directors of Aguas y Aguas de Pereira, recorded in minute number 11 of 14 October 2026, which approved eliminating from the company's structure the Professional II post that led the Risk Management Subprocess. Coordination of those tasks will pass to the management level, under the responsibility of the Planning Directorate. The company explained that the change seeks to strengthen institutional coordination on risk knowledge and reduction, as well as preparation, response and recovery in the face of emergencies that may affect Pereira's water and sewerage services. The letter mentions, among the factors considered, the 10 August earthquake and the risks linked to climate variability, including the El Niño phenomenon. The controversy also comes after, on the afternoon of Thursday 15 October, a group of women, social leaders and members of citizen collectives marched peacefully to González Quiceno's residence in Dosquebradas, a municipality neighbouring Pereira, to reject his cartoons and messages about the First Lady. The participants maintained that those publications go beyond political criticism and can affect the dignity of women, and one of the slogans displayed during the day held that violence can also be drawn. --- What remains unknown --- The source does not record a public response from Mayor Mauricio Salazar Peláez to the cartoonist's accusation, nor does it specify whether González Quiceno's wife will take legal action over the termination of the contract. The progress of the Attorney General's investigations against the cartoonist is also unknown. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the mayor of Pereira respond to Matador's accusation? Will eliminating the Professional II post affect the water company's risk management? What is the status of the Attorney General's investigations into the publications against the First Lady and the contract with the Fondo Colombia en Paz? --- EPM analysis --- The case concentrates three fronts of the same figure in a single week: the Attorney General's investigations into his publications and his contract, the citizen mobilisation outside his residence in Dosquebradas and, now, the termination of his wife's contract after 30 years of service. The company bases the decision on a board minute that eliminates the post and presents it as a reorganisation linked to risk management after the 10 August earthquake, while the cartoonist reads it as retaliation and points directly at the mayor. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the dismissal of Matador's wife is documented by the company itself as a termination without just cause, without disciplinary reasons and with compensation, derived from the elimination of the post by its board of directors. That documentary precision separates the verifiable fact from the political interpretation: the accusation against the mayor is, for now, an assertion by the cartoonist with no public reply from the official. The underlying controversy remains the boundary between political satire and the dignity of women, which this week already brought a protest to his door.
