De La Espriella announces housing funds for San Andrés and Providencia

President Abelardo De La Espriella visited San Andrés and Providencia and announced an investment of close to 35.000 millones de pesos in housing, water and…

--- The context --- President Abelardo De La Espriella had promised to travel to different regions of the country to bring solutions to the territories. This Saturday, October 17, the president visited the islands of San Andrés and Providencia in order to identify the archipelago's problems and put forward solutions from the national government. --- The facts --- After touring the islands, the president made several announcements. The first was an investment by the Housing Ministry of close to 35.000 millones de pesos, earmarked for housing, water and basic sanitation for the archipelago. That investment covers the construction of new homes, follow-up on housing improvements and actions to advance rainwater management and the sanitation of the territory. Within the package, the first 30 homes will be built for the Raizal people of Providencia, with an investment of close to $15.082 millones, and the Mayor's Office will additionally manage the construction of 70 more homes. For water and basic sanitation, the president announced an investment of $20.341 millones, to be used for infrastructure, the operation of the San Andrés solid waste plant and the Basura Cero program in Providencia. --- The positions --- The president said that in San Andrés the government will review, house by house, the 103 pending improvements and will extend the Casa Milagro program to the whole archipelago. He added that at the end of October a technical roundtable will be installed with the Raizal community and the Mayor's Office to follow up on all of this at the end of November. The president also said he did not come to the archipelago with empty promises, stating that he came to deliver with deeds and that he ordered historic investments, without intermediaries, to recover the hospital, modernize the airport, improve the roads and deliver capital directly to local entrepreneurs. He further said the government will pursue the criminals who have the islands under siege, vowing to pursue them with the full force of the law and put them behind bars, and assuring that the archipelago is not alone. --- What remains unknown --- The source does not detail the disbursement schedule for the announced resources or the start dates for the housing works in Providencia. It also does not specify how the $20.341 millones will be distributed among infrastructure, the operation of the solid waste plant and the Basura Cero program. --- Unanswered questions --- When will construction begin on the first 30 homes for the Raizal people of Providencia? What will the house-by-house review of the 103 pending improvements in San Andrés produce? How will the announced water and basic sanitation resources for the archipelago be executed? --- EPM analysis --- The announcement gathers in a single visit the fronts the president himself listed for the archipelago: housing for the Raizal community, water and basic sanitation, and security. The technical roundtable announced for the end of October, with the Raizal community and the Mayor's Office, will be the first space to follow up on the commitments, with a review planned for the end of November. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the visit leaves measurable commitments with dates attached: 30 initial homes with assigned resources, 103 improvements to be reviewed house by house and a technical roundtable that must be installed at the end of October with the Raizal community and the Mayor's Office. The value of the announcement will lie in execution: if the roundtable is installed, the end-of-November follow-up takes place and the works move forward, the government will have turned its promise to tour the territories into verifiable management for the archipelago.
